”Man Files Antitrust Suit Against Time Warner Over Forced Cable Box Rentals
Matthew Meeds of Fairway, Kansas, doesn't want to pay Time Warner Cable a monthly rental fee for his cable box—he'd rather own one outright. He's filed suit against the cable provider and its parent company, Time Warner, Inc., accusing them of establishing an illegal tying arrangement by making the box rental a condition of the subscription agreement. He's seeking class-action status for all TWC premium customers in Kansas. More »It's A Miracle! This Free Digital TV Converter Box Will Cost Me $100
We know you're too smart to fall for this ridiculously fraudulent digital TV converter offer, but maybe you know someone who's not wise to the facts of the upcoming switch to digital TV—specifically that converter boxes cost less than $100, and that you can get a government coupon to offset $40 of that cost. Universal TechTronics—the same scam outfit behind those "Amish" Heat Surge miracle fireplaces—is now conning the less knowledegable with their "free" converter box offer: pay nothing but a warranty and shipping, bringing the total cost to anywhere between $68 and $97. The Los Angeles Times says this is "the first large-scale [converter box] scam the Better Business Bureau has seen." More »Best Buy Apologizes For Charging You Too Much Tax On Your DTV Converter Box
The way coupons are taxed is different in every state— and believe us — it gets really complicated. The general rule, in most (but not all) states is that consumers are taxed on the full amount of the transaction — including any reimbursement that the store gets. More »

Blank Discs Inside Call Of Duty 4 At Best Buy? Better Open Them In The Store
Reader Zak writes to tell us that his copy of Call of Duty 4 was blank. Thankfully, he opened it while he was still inside the Best Buy, so exchanging it wasn't a problem. (Though some random Geek Squad guy did accuse him of being a scammer.)I generally read a few of the network sites, Giz, LH and of course for a chuckle I also read Consumerist. Now I lack photo proof of this as I immediately did an illegal u-turn and took my product back to the store, but I'll let you know anyways.More »

Get Moving Boxes On The Cheap With Box Exchange
We're going to say something positive about U-Haul! No, not about the company (it has a rich history of complaints on our blog), but about the community trading service they've enabled on their "U-Haul Box Exchange" forum where people give away or sell their boxes after they've moved—although hopefully you won't find an unpacked baby in any used boxes you get your hands on.
