Should An Airline Be Allowed To Say Your Shirt Is Too Offensive?
By Chris Morran on May 23, 2012 1:20 PM
When does an airline passenger's attire cross a line and become so offensive they should not be allowed to board? And who determines where that line is drawn? Those are the questions surrounding an incident involving a woman who says she missed her connecting flight because a pilot said her shirt was inappropriate. More »

Survey Finds Best & Worst Airlines For Redeeming Rewards Miles
By Chris Morran on May 17, 2012 11:15 AM
It's incredibly easy to pile up airline miles. I think I just earned 400 miles for merely mentioning this fact. But as you may have already discovered, it's not always so simple to actually redeem those miles. A new survey looked at dozens of domestic and international carriers to find which ones were more likely to have seats available for rewards travel. More »

American Airlines Regrets That Whole Lifetime First Class Pass Thing
By Mary Beth Quirk on May 7, 2012 4:00 PM
Back in the day, American Airlines thought it was a pretty good idea to sell unlimited first-class travel for a lifetime. For a few hundred thousand dollars, travelers could hop on a jet any time, and for an additional fee, so could a companion of their choice. Turns out that costs American a lot of money, and they're trying to shut the whole thing down as a result. More »

Airlines Forced To Roll Back Price Hike Because Not Everyone Joined In
By Mary Beth Quirk on April 23, 2012 10:00 AM
When it comes to airline price hikes, it's all for one or none at all. Last week it seemed Delta Air Lines would get away with an increase of $10 to $20 on last-minute domestic roundtrips, because American, United and US Airways all joined in. This time, however, it appears they've been thwarted. More »

Be Ready For A Hassle When Flying With Your Snub-Nosed Dog
By Chris Morran on April 20, 2012 2:40 PM
A number of airlines already have bans on allowing snub-nosed dogs like pugs, bulldogs and boxers to be checked in their planes' cargo holds. However, traveling with one of those dogs in a carry-on bag in the cabin should be just fine. The problem is, not everyone at the airlines is aware of this fact. More »

U.S. Airways CEO Really Wants To Get His Merge On With American Airlines
By Chris Morran on April 20, 2012 12:50 PM
To date, the folks at U.S. Airways have been quite coy about their intentions regarding a possible marriage to struggling-but-adorable American Airlines, saying things like "we're not opposed," and that they "wouldn't rule it out," but all that double talk may have ended with the latest hot-and-heavy chatter from U.S. Airways' CEO. By Mary Beth Quirk on April 19, 2012 10:00 AM
Remember yesterday when we were like, yeah, it would stink if other airlines joined with Delta in attempting to hike fares by $10 to $20? Guess what, everyone? Some went ahead and did that. American Airlines and United Airlines threw their pricey hats in the ring. More »

American Airlines Voucher Disappears In The Mail, Airline Shrugs
By Laura Northrup on April 6, 2012 1:30 PM
The original copy of an air travel voucher has mystical powers, and flights can only be scheduled using the original copy. At least, that's the impression we get from Ashley's experience. When she went to redeem her voucher, she mailed it in, as required. Only the tracking number hasn't been scanned in the USPS system, and there's no sign of the voucher. More »

American Airlines Staffer Refuses To Let Me Fly Twice In One Day
By Chris Morran on April 5, 2012 12:30 PM
We've posted numerous stories in recent years about airline staffers booting passengers from flights or having them detained after the plane lands for reasons that seem pretty petty. And here's the story of a Consumerist reader who says he wasn't even allowed on his plane because an American Airlines employee had issues with both of his passports, even though the TSA had no problems. Puppy Vs. Airline Personnel: How Misinformation Messed Up Our Vacation Plans
By Laura Northrup on March 29, 2012 12:45 PM
On its surface, the facts of David's story are the very definition of a "first world problem." His family missed part of their tropical vacation because misinformed American Airlines personnel wouldn't let their puppy on the plane. They incorrectly believed that St. Maartens, their destination, requires incoming animals to be microchipped. It's true that no one has to vacation with their pet, but sometimes transporting an animal by air internationally is necessary due to a move or a family emergency. And when that happens, hope that you don't encounter the American Airlines employees who cost David's family a lot of money by keeping them off their flight. More »

By Chris Morran on March 16, 2012 1:15 PM
Even though U.S. Airways has made it known to struggling American Airlines that it would like to go on a few dates — only coffee, maybe a drink or two; no heavy petting — its bankrupt object of affection may not be rushing to the altar. More »

Have New Domain Names Outed U.S. Airways & American Airlines' Merger Plans?
By Chris Morran on March 12, 2012 3:30 PM
This is like finding out your friend is getting married because you inadvertently see them browsing for reception halls or wedding DJs. If a slew of recently registered website domain names are to be believed, the much-hinted merger between American Airlines and U.S. Airways might be closer to reality than merely mulling over a dream pre-nup. Some Airlines Starting To Get It, Installing Roomier Overhead Bins
By Mary Beth Quirk on March 12, 2012 10:00 AM
After seeing countless passengers refusing to believe that their wheelie bag isn't going to fit in closed bins, while others just will not listen to flight attendants' pleas of "please don't put your coat in the overhead bin," some airlines are actually expanding the size of their overhead bins. Flight Attendant Removed From Flight For Talking About Plane Crashing Over PA System
By Mary Beth Quirk on March 9, 2012 1:00 PM
The last thing passengers want to hear from a flight attendant on the PA is anything relating to crashing — even when the plane is still on the ground and there's actually no danger of that happening. An American Airlines flight out of Dallas Fort Worth was delayed and sent back to the gate this morning when a flight attendant went rogue. More »

Frequent Flier Mile Auctions Look Like A Sucker Bet
By Chris Morran on March 6, 2012 11:34 AM
If you're a member of any of the major airlines' frequent flier programs, you've probably received e-mails trying to get you to use those miles to bid on auctions for anything from resort getaways to Kentucky Derby passes. But the people who win these auctions may just be tossing away good miles. More »

U.S. Airways Confirms It's Out To Woo American Airlines
By Chris Morran on January 25, 2012 4:15 PM
Late last week, it was revealed that U.S. Airways was checking out American Airlines' OKcupid profile in the hope the two could go on a nice coffee date and maybe get married and have a bunch of kids and a huge house in the suburbs. At the time U.S. Airways, who got burned a couple years back after getting hot-and-heavy with United, played coy about its intentions. But today the carrier is being more open about its amorous intentions. More »

By Chris Morran on January 23, 2012 11:15 AM
It hasn't even been two years since U.S. Airways called off its pre-nuptial pillow talk with United Airlines, opting instead to remain single. And while it hasn't rebounded as quickly as its spurned beau, who ran off with that Continental cad only a few shot months later, a new report says that U.S. Airlines is considering the possibility of a happily ever after ending with American Airlines. By Mary Beth Quirk on January 10, 2012 11:00 AM
While running the gauntlet of the daily grind, one can get caught up in everything that can go wrong for a consumer, which is why we downright love it when something goes right. And if we can help a tiny bit, that's nice, too. Rachael writes that her friend lost his laptop on a recent flight, and she immediately thought of Consumerist. More »
