<![CDATA[witeowl commented on Earmark New and Used Kitchen Sponges]]> I guess while I'm at it, I might as well share my (probably duh-worthy) system for using microfiber cloths in the kitchen.

I loathe wet cloths sitting around the kitchen. Yech! Also, you're supposed to follow up a wet cloth with a dry cloth when using microfiber. So, it's simple. After use, the day's wrung-out wet cloth goes into the kitchen hamper (with other microfiber cloths and fabric napkins, so nothing gets mildewy). The dry cloth, after following-up the wet cloth, remains on the counter and is used for quick and small wipe-ups for 24 hours. The dry cloth then becomes the wet cloth for the thorough cleaning of the evening. The wet cloth goes into the hamper, and a new dry cloth gets pulled out for the follow-up and next 24 hours worth of quick cleaning.

That's about seven cloths a week. Adding in cloths used in various other parts of the house, it makes a small laundry load every two weeks. Because the cloths are being regularly laundered, there's no need to designate different cloths to different areas.

<![CDATA[witeowl commented on DIY Cat Litter Box Ventilation System]]> Now that... that... is smart. I mean, even with a brand-spanking fresh never-used litter box, there will be smell (and that dust) for a while after. (Anyone who claims that there isn't a smell for a while right after their cat goes is either in denial or has just become accustomed to it.) I don't have cats right now, but I'll be looking to figure out something like this if I ever do again!

<![CDATA[witeowl commented on TabsLock Puts Your Browser One Keystroke Away]]> I'm too lazy to use my keyboard to open my browser. Using GyroTools (sorry non Gyration users), all I have to do is press and hold my middle mouse button to open or hide Maxthon. Life is good.

Nonetheless, good idea to map my capslock key to something else with AutoHotKey. Don't know what, yet, but it'll come to me...

<![CDATA[witeowl commented on Take a Knife to Magazines for Efficient Reading]]> Yeah, when I saw the title of this article, I thought that maybe he'd be slicing all the pages and then scanning them in to his computer using an auto-feed scanner, as I've considered doing, and then reading them off his laptop while commuting. Then I realized that most people wouldn't have auto-feed scanners.

Here's my tip for magazines: multitask while in the bathroom. I read while in the bath, while blowdrying my hair, and, well, need I say it? I hardly ever read a magazine outside of that little room.

<![CDATA[witeowl commented on Install a Water-Saving Shower Shutoff Valve]]> @Kohath: Why do we keep using drinking water to flush our wastes? The drinking water is filtered before it reaches us, we flush, it needs to be filtered again. Do you really not see the problem with that system and the ultimate consequences of this sort of behavior?

You may view "civilization" as irreponsibility, wastefulness and consumption in the name of convenience, but I see the true mark of civilization as a society of people who can see beyond the end of their noses and take responsible action to preserve our limited resources. I hope that one day we truly are civilized.

<![CDATA[witeowl commented on Remove Splinters with a Pumice Stone]]> What I do: Cover the area with butter or lard (or, for the less food-oriented among us: neosporin or other petrolatum-based antibiotic). Cover with a bandage. Forget about it. The splinters will work themselves out.

Of course, this only works when it's not whole hands or feet that are affected.

<![CDATA[witeowl commented on Back Up and Sync Your Cell Phone with BitPim]]> Wah! I was so excited with this post, having just downgraded to a regular phone from years of PDA phones. (My recent usage just couldn't justify getting another one.) Unfortunately, I can't get it to work with my LG Shine... I tried this to no avail. (It didn't brick, it was just unable to connect.) Any tips would be appreciated.

<![CDATA[witeowl commented on HitMeLater Re-Sends Email When You Want It]]> @ZeroCool898: Maybe I'm misunderstanding, but are you referring to something like starring a gmail message? The problem is that you still need to remember to look at those starred messages at the right time. This is a bit more in-your-face, as you'll re-receive the e-mail after the delay you specify.

But, if you have a simple one-step way of adding it to your calendar with a reminder, then that would certainly be better than this.

Only problem I've seen so far with hitmelater: formatting for an e-mail I tried was lost, making it a bear to read. But, of course, since I already knew what was in the e-mail, it wasn't a huge deal...

<![CDATA[witeowl commented on HitMeLater Re-Sends Email When You Want It]]> Interesting. I frequently forward e-mails to myself through groupwise's scheduled send feature, but this seems like much less of a hassle. (And universal, since it appears to work from any e-mail.)

I'll be sure to test it with a disposable e-mail account first, of course, but if it's truly spamless, this will be excellent.

<![CDATA[witeowl commented on Edison Makes Your PC Go Green]]> @aerialsoul: I didn't read this very well. I wish I had, because you're right: only being able to schedule one solid block of work time is a bit frustrating for home use.

Even at work, wouldn't it be beneficial to schedule by 60-minute blocks, so I could set it differently during lunch or regular meeting times?

I haven't uninstalled it, because I figure it's still better than nothing, but I'm still holding out for the perfect solution without requiring too much of my precious, dwindling brain power to set up.

<![CDATA[witeowl clipped Alpha Geek: 10 cool cell phone tricks]]> <![CDATA[witeowl clipped Get In Shape With Little or No Equipment]]> <![CDATA[witeowl commented on Top 10 Conversation Hacks]]> @Hantra: My thought as well. #2 is just a way to get the police involved. To tag on your suggestion to RELAX, I'll also say LISTEN and ACKNOWLEDGE. You don't need to agree or admit any wrongdoing, but you need to acknowledge that their thoughts, feelings, and perspectives are valid from their point of view. That'll feel like agreement for long enough for them to get themselves back together.

I used this successfully for someone who thought I had belittled her in a meeting and she totally unleashed on me. When she described her interpretation of the events, even though they were completely incorrect from my point of view, I said things like, "I understand why that would make you upset." Because, really, I did understand why that would make her upset. It's not how it really happened, but if it had happened that way, she would be completely right to feel slighted. After I let her vent and unwind, I was able to calmly describe my perspective on the events, and we were able to come to a bit of shared understanding.
