You wanted to know about automated PC wakeups... It's something I do regularly in XP, and it's probably similar in Vista.
You'll want to setup a scheduled task (It won't matter if it stays open or not) to run when you want the PC to wake up. There will be an option somewhere (never used Vista's task scheduler) to "wake the PC up to run this task" or something similar. Most non-ancient PCs (2005+) will work fine from S1 or S3 (or 'hybrid sleep') (if there's a BIOS option for S3, select it; it uses less power than S1, usually only 1W more than being off), and usually even S4 (hibernate), which uses no extra power.
If you wanted to do an automated standby or hibernate, then nircmd will be able to do that (google it) with a simple 'nircmd standby' or 'nircmd hibernate'.
