"@AuntieMaim: "it's unclear whether the link between obesity and, for example, diabetes is even causal, and it's sad that so much of the American public has bought it hook, line, and sinker, and started to take up that argument too."
Even though you clarified what you meant by "it," I think this statement holds true even if "it" is assumed to mean the link between diabetes and obesity.
I am obese, but I consume about 800-1000 calories a day, have low-normal blood pressure, normal cholesterol, and "beautiful" (in my doctor's words) blood sugars."
"@jaya9581: "I rage every January when all the magazines start publishing articles about how all these extremely overweight people lost hundreds of pounds."
"@Jon Bothe: "When I went through a severe bout of depression, Abilify caused me to jump up 10lbs in a week so I looked harder at what I ate and adjusted and got myself off the drug by getting over the depression."
You're still making yourself sound worse than you should have, and I hope you'll admit fault in this as well:
Although I'm happy that you were able to "get over the depression," statements like that perpetuate the myth that depression is something that can be simply willed under one's control.
Situational depression - the natural result of life circumstances such as a death, loss of support structure, or other similar event - can be "gotten over" to some extent, much in the same way you "get over" a cold."
"People do some crazy crap in response to telemarketers and junk mailers.
A guy in my town, a few years ago, drove to the offices of a local mailer/flyer company and threw most of a gallon of house paint on the receptionist because he was unhappy about getting their junk mail - just, out of the blue, decides that this is a good way to handle the situation."
"@LastAndLeast: It's also called a "terroristic" threat, which (to my ear at least) has a slightly different connotation.
Personal story about "terroristic threats:"
Several years ago, my brother, who's paranoid schizophrenic, was attending a local Community College and was having a bad day."
