<![CDATA[ceejeemcbeegee commented on In Defense Of Seth Rogen]]> Our reader has a point - Rogen certainly wouldn't be the first man to mistake an environment where he's comfortable for one where everyone's comfortable, and it's quite possible that Heigl's input wouldn't have been as welcome as his.

Whatevs! If you know anything about Apatow/Rogen films, you know that any and all input is welcome. Have you ever listened to the "40yo Virgin" commentary track. Half the time, there's not even a real script and the actors adlib most their lines. If Heigl objected, she SHOULD have said something then if she objected. There is no doubt in my mind she would have been heard.

We slave until we're almost dead
We're happy-hearted roustabouts

And when we do, we throw our pay away

We get our pay when children say
With happy hearts, "It's circus day today"

]]>
<![CDATA[ceejeemcbeegee commented on Why Is Disney's First Black Princess Such A Challenge?]]> The only "princess" I think Disney's gotten right is Mulan. She was strong, she kicked ass, and she got the guy. Why does Mulan stand out? Because western culture tends to view Asian culture with reverence and envy. They are warriors. They are peaceful. The men are strong and the women demure. Every thing about Asian culture is considered "cool".

When it comes to AA culture, what aspects does the greater society revere or envy? Slavery? Voodoo? Hip-hop? All of these things have greatly negative connotations.

Disney's Black princess can't be African because we tend to look down on Ancient African culture. Spear-chuckers. Barefoot, topless, polygamist heathens. Who would want their child to emulate that?

Hollywood can't even admit that the Egyptians built the pyramids, let alone acknowledge they were African. Ever notice how light skinned Arabs are always cast as Egyptians?

I'm all for Disney to have a Black princess, but I do not expect them to "get it right" no more than they have gotten any other princess right.

If Disney's looking for some decent source material to lift an idea from, why not from a Black/African play like "Once on This Island"?

PS. Disney did have a African princess, but she was a lion.

Word. I was conceived even tho' my mom's tubes were tied and she was thinking about a hysterectomy. God wanted me here, so I'm here.
