"The law (as stated by the Supreme Court in Quill, as noted in the post) says that, if a company has a physical presence in your state, they have to collect your state's sales tax from sales to people in your state. If the company's doesn't have a physical presence, it doesn't have to collect the tax, but you still owe it - you're just responsible for writing the state a check, rather than having the store pay the tax on your behalf."
