"@AtomikB: Except that smaller pieces would have a greater likelihood of themselves breaking apart and disintegrating in the atmosphere. I agree there would not be much difference between a 6km and 2 3km asteroids, but there would be a huge difference between 1 1km asteroid, and 100 10m asteroids."
