"I hate being "ma'am." Especially as the first time I got "ma'am" instead of "miss" I was still a tiny bit shy of my 22nd birthday. In my head I'm not much different than I was in grad school -- scruffy and clearly destitute, as grad students of the arts generally are -- but in reality I'm clearly much closer to 30 than to 20 and the rings on my left hand indicate that "Mrs." and "ma'am" are fair game."
