There were only a few brands that could withstand her. And she was a miniature poodle.

So it's entirely possible that their dog wrecked the toy the first time they gave it to him.

<![CDATA[CumaeanSibyl commented on We Review Drank, The "Anti-Energy" Drank]]> @Egg Yolkeo: Yep. Alternately, you can use water, though making a traditional hot tea is (as I understand it) not the best thing for preserving its properties.

And yes, it smells and tastes like dirt. Or feet. I've found, though, that it mixes quite well with Bushmill's Black Bush, which tastes like alcoholic feet.

<![CDATA[CumaeanSibyl commented on Colgate-Palmolive has reported]]> I wonder if people are cutting back on more expensive organic/small-business/fancy products, like Tom's of Maine toothpaste or Method cleaners, and going back to the plainer equivalents. That could account for some of the change.

Laugh riot? Maybe not, but the joke is about companies who make shit up to get out of trouble, not disabled people. Would it have made you feel better if the bullshit excuse were something like "Crazy Larry in the mailroom set all the mail on fire one day and the men in the white coats took him away," or would you find that offensive to people with mental illnesses?

<![CDATA[CumaeanSibyl commented on Debt Slavery: Why Are Americans So Willing To Dig Themselves Deep Into Debt?]]> I think the problem is that our values didn't change fast enough, because we didn't perceive what was going on. We were still operating under the old system, thinking "if the bank lends this money to me, it must be okay to spend it," while the banks went over to a new system without reasonable limits. We expected those limits to be there, but we never ran into them.

It's irresponsible as hell to lend money without the considerations that used to be in place, but at some point we really should have figured out that the game had changed -- you know, before disaster struck. It's not the bank's job to keep us honest, though I submit that it is the bank's job to lend only that which can be repaid.

<![CDATA[CumaeanSibyl commented on Companies Don't Hate You... They Just Love Phone Trees More]]> I like automated phone systems, because talking on the phone makes me nervous. The voice-recognition ones are sort of obnoxious, but I really sort of prefer pushing buttons to talking to people. If there's a way that I can find out the information I need without talking to someone, that's awesome; if I can get directed to the department that can handle my issue just by pushing a button, that's also great. Being on hold is a lot more annoying than pushing buttons, and that can happen whether there's an automated system or not.

I know I'm not the only person with phone problems, but I also know that we're kind of in the minority.

]]>
<![CDATA[CumaeanSibyl commented on This Is What I'm Spending Less On]]> Heh. We just signed up for AT&T's fiber-optic TV/internet/phone package, which means we'll have TV now for the first time ever. Screw the recession, let's spend some money! :)

Funny thing, though? The internet and phone bill will be less than it was for DSL/traditional phone, for far better service (flat rate on all calls, bandwidth that actually resembles advertised speeds). That, and we're getting a month of TV free and $200 cash back. So hey.

We've always lived pretty cheaply, anyway, since we're a one-income household -- he bikes to work and eats microwave soups for lunch, I bike to the grocery store when I can and cook bulk meals for the freezer. The mortgage and utility bills are low and there's only one student loan to pay off. When you keep your basic/recurring expenses low like that, there isn't much to worry about.

Also, our '98 Ford Escort gets 30 mpg city/40 highway. I don't know why Detroit's whining so much about fuel efficiency standards when they clearly were capable of making an efficient car ten years ago.

<![CDATA[CumaeanSibyl commented on 12 Ways To Save Money Without Scrimping]]> The best extravagance is entertaining your friends. Back in college, everyone was very careful to make sure that people were contributing equally to the cost of whatever, which made for a lot of running around trying to make change and complicated financial calculations (okay, he brought the chips, but I brought the beer, so he owes me five bucks but he can give that to Jerry to buy pizza and...)

After all of that business, it feels terribly extravagant to have people over and just throw food and drinks at them without worrying about collecting money at the end of the evening.

<![CDATA[CumaeanSibyl commented on Nine Inch Nails is offering]]> I already bought Ghosts I-IV in physical form even though I could've just had the mp3s for $5. What I really appreciated was that, when you bought the album, they included a high-quality download and a bunch of extras, so I didn't have to go to the trouble of ripping the CDs.

I'll probably buy this one too, and you know, I'll probably buy Year Zero at some point. I don't have terribly discriminating taste in music, so I'm sure I'll like them. Anyway, I have a whole ton of NIN tracks on my computer that I didn't pay for.
