Is It Fair For Extreme Couponers To Take All The Mouthwash Just Because They Can?
By Mary Beth Quirk on February 29, 2012 5:00 PM
We've all the seen the devastation an extreme couponer can wreak on a display of deodeoants, if not firsthand, then on the TLC show aptly named Extreme Couponing. Sure, it's awesome for the couponer, but what about the average customer who just wants to buy one shampoo, not 23, and there are none to be found? Stores have been adjusting their policies in certain regions as a result. More Â»

By Mary Beth Quirk on May 12, 2011 1:15 PM
Oh, Groupon. Always offering to make life better with half of Middle Eastern fare or with a discount waxing, then turning around and getting all grabby and greedy. It's worse overseas, as apparently, Groupon gets to pocket the money from any unredeemed vouchers. More Â»

This Gap Manager Doesn't Want Your Groupon Coupon
By Chris Walters on September 7, 2010 12:30 PM
Alex and his wife bought into a Groupon offer for Gap, where you could buy $50 worth of merchandise for $25. Everything was going great until they ran into a manager at their local store who refused to even ring up the pants they'd chosen, saying anything already discounted wasn't eligible for the offer. Frito-Lay is warning consumers to watch out for fake free bags of Doritos coupons being distributed via email. If you are an unsuspecting victim of this subterfuge and receive the coupon in your inbox, watch out! You might get to check out and not be able to get a free bag of Doritos with a value of up to $5. New Jersey Wants To End Mail In Rebates
By Chris Walters on May 10, 2010 10:55 AM
Mail in rebates are a sneaky way to make things look cheaper than they actually are at the point of sale, since many consumers never actually get any cash back. Now New Jersey's state Assembly is considering legislation that would require retailers to charge shoppers the after-rebate price on goods, instead of forcing them to mail in or submit online requests. If the retailer still wants to take advantage of the rebate, that's no problem; he'll just have to mail it in himself. More Â»

Electronic Coupons Are Watching Your Every Shopping Move
By Mary Beth Quirk on April 17, 2010 4:12 PM
If you like printing out coupons from the Internet but don’t like for retailers to know too much about you, um, now might be a good time to stop. Coupons sent to cell phones or printed out from sites like Ebates.com or even Facebook can contain info all about who is spending money on what products, how often, and so on and so forth, all in a bid for retailers to better market to consumers. Don't Count On That Rebate From MSI
By Chris Walters on March 22, 2010 3:04 PM
My advice on mail-in-rebates is to ignore them when you're trying to decide on a purchase. They take too long to receive, during which time you've paid a higher amount on the product. Even worse, it's easy for a company to deny a claim and refuse to cooperate with you, and it's hard for consumers to get misbehaving companies to play fairly. More Â»

Hey Domino's, Thanks For The Coupon That's Not A Coupon
By Chris Morran on March 9, 2010 3:52 PM
While it's relatively pleasant to be writing a story about Domino's that doesn't involve a robbery, this is still not a good news post. Consumerist reader Tim recently attempted to use a coupon while ordering online from Domino's, though apparently no one told Domino's that their coupons should actually work. More Â»

Cheaters Ruin 1-800-Flowers Chocolate Box Promotion For Everyone
By Laura Northrup on February 12, 2010 2:00 PM
The chocolate box/flowers promotion seemed like a great idea. On certain boxes of Harry London candy sold in chain drugstores, there was a peel-off coupon offering up to $20 off an order from 1-800-Flowers. The problem is that some unscrupulous shoppers went into stores, peeled all of the coupons off, sold some codes on the Internet, and ruined the promotion for everyone. Now 1-800-Flowers has put a stop to the promotion, and is canceling already placed flower orders out from under customers. Not cool. More Â»

United Stewards' "TMI" Session Nets Traveler $250 Coupon
By Ben Popken on February 1, 2010 11:00 AM
Bucky Turco got a $250 credit for his next United Express flight after he complained about the two-hour gab fest between two United stewards he endured on a recent trip from SLC to ORD. In that time he learned from the two women such factoids as: Hispanics, Blacks and Asians shouldn't go blonde, a type of birth control gave one of the stewards' sister menstrual spots, how getting spit on is the ultimate disrespect, right up there with getting a shoe thrown at you like George Bush did, and more. Too much information! More Â»

By Phil Villarreal on December 11, 2009 10:15 AM
Peter spotted this ad while making a deposit at a Central Pacific Bank in Hawaii. Why Is Sears Being So Sneaky On This Dishwasher Rebate?
By Chris Walters on December 4, 2009 3:09 PM
On Black Friday, Sears offered free installation on select Kenmore dishwashers in the form of a rebate coupon. The coupon is pretty simple to understand as far as these things go—buy one of the listed models, and Sears will pay for the installation. According to William, however, the listed model that he wanted remained out of stock only for the duration of the coupon. When he asked Sears to honor it the next day, they agreed to—but then after he bought the dishwasher they told him he had broken a nonexistent rule and therefore had voided the coupon. More Â»

Arby's Coupon Promotion Wastes Trees, Mystifies Customers
By Laura Northrup on November 29, 2009 1:00 PM
Mike received this coupon sheet when buying a $5.01 combo at Arby's. We get it, Arby's, the combo is such a good deal that you don't need a coupon. You've made your point. We don't need thousands of useless coupon sheets that will go straight into the trash around to make the point for you. Thanks, commenters—evidently, this is the tray liner, so not so much a waste of paper. But a 1 cent coupon is still inherently silly. More Â»

By Laura Northrup on October 31, 2009 1:00 PM

Boston Market restaurants are experiencing chicken shortages after their coupon offering customers on their mailing list a full chicken meal for $1. Bundle Of 'Discounts' Triples Your Odds Of Getting Ripped Off
By consumerist.com on September 15, 2009 12:56 PM

—>The are plenty of scams promoted in the backwaters of local radio and late-night TV ads. Most tend to focus on one ripoff at a time; after all, why complicate the message by asking listeners to choose how they want to get fleeced. Macy's Makes Fun Of Coupons With Its Latest Coupon
By Chris Walters on April 7, 2009 7:18 PM

It must be true, because no other department store has such a love of fine print on coupons—and such an apparent hatred of actual coupons. Why Do Some Stores Act Stupid About Coupons?

Why The Quiznos Free Sandwich Promo Burnt Some Customers
By Ben Popken on February 27, 2009 7:03 PM

—>According to tipster Rich Piotrowski, a former Quiznos franchise owner who won a counter-suit against the company, the big reason why some Quiznos were being jerks about taking the free sandwich coupon is that at first corporate was making the franchises pay for all the sandwiches. (Quiznos mandates franchises buy all their ingredients from HQ, often at above-market rates...). Then it looks like they decided to reimburse up to 400 coupons, then bumped that up to 700 to meet the demand, and now they're going to reimburse all coupons. Don't give away free stuff in these times unless you're ready for an onslaught of interest, at the outset. Corporate seems to have realized this and contacted us to say that if you have any problems redeeming coupons you can email millionsubs@quiznos.com. Troubles With Redeeming Quiznos Free Sandwich Coupons
By Ben Popken on February 26, 2009 4:58 AM

—>Looks like some Quiznos aren't too happy about the free sandwich campaign. Readers report interactions ranging from coupons being denied, to local franchises making up new limitations on it (like only certain sandwiches are eligible, or requiring drink and chip purchase), to being treated like thieving jerks. The coupon says the offer is only good at "participating stores," but doesn't say anything that in lieu of free sandwich the coupon will be exchanged for rude attitudes. Inside, the conflict between corporate, the franchises, and the customer caught in-between. Oh, and yes, they do check IDs.  More Â»

Kmart Assistant Manager Hates Your Coupons, Will Not Process Your Transaction
By Chris Walters on February 24, 2009 5:37 PM

—>If you're one of those really smart coupon hoarders, you know to save up for double-coupon offers, because then you can get things for next-to-nothing. Nicole has used this strategy at Kmart in the past without problems, but this time she ran into an assistant manager who refused to honor the promotion, saying, "It's not our policy. It's not written down, but that's the policy."  More Â»

Free Quiznos Subs
By Ben Popken on February 23, 2009 10:55 PM

—>Quiznos is giving out free sub coupons. All you have to do is give your first name, last name, zip, birthday, and email address for their marketing database and tell them what your favorite sub is. Once the email arrives in your box, it will be equipped with some kind of send-to-a-friend function so they can also exchange their personal information for sandwiches. Radio Shack Employee Lies, Says Government Requires Your Name And Address To Use DTV Coupon
By Chris Walters on February 11, 2009 5:35 PM

—>Tim tried to use a Digital TV coupon at a Philadelphia Radio Shack and was told that he had to provide his name and address in order to redeem it, as per government regulations. Strike out "government" and replace with "imaginary" and you're closer to the truth. Hmm, did this Radio Shack employee just break the law?  More Â»

"There Are Worms In My Goobers!"
By Chris Walters on February 5, 2009 8:14 PM
Out of an abundance of caution, Dollar General has ordered its stores to remove Goobers candy from its shelves and is programming its point-of-sale systems to block transactions of this product pending further investigation."  More Â»

With a vote of 264-158, the House agreed to delay the DTV transition to June 12. The Senate voted last week for the delay, and President Obama is expected to sign it. The delay will help the millions of consumers whose coupons expired before the converters were even available, as well as the two million on a waiting list for the coupons.  More Â»

People Think Coupon Users Are Cheapskates, Unless You're Hot
By Ben Popken on October 10, 2008 3:42 PM

—>If you use coupons in a store, your fellow shoppers are probably negatively judging you as being cheap, according to a new study. The stigma extends to those around the coupon redeemer as well. However, if you're hot, you get a reprieve. The study had people watch consumers cash coupons, and then interviewed the participants afterward for their reaction. The stigma is lessened if you don't know the person using the coupon, the coupon is of high value, if they're in a different line, and if the coupon-user is a hottie. Researchers proposed that the reason for the coupon-hating is "the modern consumer tends to prize status and luxury over thrift."  More Â»

Canon's Rebate Program Is Blurry And Poorly Lit
By Chris Walters on September 22, 2008 1:55 PM

Pizza Hut Accuses Customer Of "Making The Coupon Up"
By Carey Alexander on September 20, 2008 2:30 PM

—>Pizza Hut called Danielle a liar for trying to redeem a promotional coupon they emailed to her and displayed prominently on their website. In exchange for completing an offer from TrialPay, Danielle should have received two free medium pizzas, one with toppings, plus breadsticks. Instead, her favorite pizza place told her, "M'am, you're lying about what the coupon promised."  More Â»

This Subway Is Going To Reject Your Coupon One Way Or Another
By Chris Walters on September 20, 2008 1:06 AM

H&R Block Offering $100 Coupons Or Free Software To Same-Sex Couples Who Were Denied Online Service
By Chris Walters on July 17, 2008 3:20 PM

—>It's too late for this year's tax season (unless you're doing it wrong), but H&R has issued an apology of sorts by announcing it will give a $100 coupon or free TaxCut software to gay couples who were shut out of their online programs this year due to a programming oversight. Don't expect to take advantage of the offer if you were turned away online and went elsewhere, though—the offer is only good for "civil union, domestic and same sex partner clients, who started with TaxCut online and then completed their returns in one of our retail offices." If you fit that requirement, you can request the coupon or software hereMore Â»

Stein Mart Settles Personal Data Breach By Offering... Coupons
By Chris Walters on July 8, 2008 8:00 PM

—>Stein Mart was caught "printing expiration dates and/or more than the last five digits of credit cards on receipts," and was subsequently hit with a class action lawsuit for exposing sensitive customer data. Now they've settled by agreeing to run coupons in local newspapers. It gets better: instead of a flat 20% off coupon, the store is requiring minimum-purchase amounts that reduce the savings if your purchase falls between the arbitrarily set thresholds.

    • $10 off a purchase of $50 or more
    • $20 off a purchase of $100 or more
    • $30 off a purchase of $150 or more
We need a new federal law that says class action lawyers have to be compensated in the same manner as their clients. Give those hard working guys and gals some $30-off coupons, please!  More Â»

Target Discontinues Coupon Due To Rampant Fraud
By Meg Marco on July 7, 2008 9:13 PM

—>If you downloaded a web coupon that offered $5 off any $25 purchase at Target, you should know that you've been had. Someone altered a real coupon—removing the image and the word "toy," in order to make it seem like it applied to any purchase. The original undoctored coupon, which was e-mailed to 85,000 Target customers, was for $5 off any $25 toy purchase, and Target is now pulling the coupon due to the rampant fraud.  More Â»

Domino's Litters Your Driveway With Coupons, Rocks And Ziplocs
By Jay Slatkin on June 16, 2008 12:07 PM

—>Not content with contaminating your mailbox or using your windshield wiper as coupon clip, Domino's has found a new hi-tech method of distributing coupons using the concept of inertial mass combined with a transparent weatherproof barrier. Ok, it's actually just a Ziploc filled with coupons and rocks. Reader Will arrived home to discover the baggies littering his driveway and those of his neighbors'. We assume that the rocks allow the lazy Domino's employees to easily fling the bundles out of their car windows and help keep the baggie weighted down. Will's letter, inside...  More Â»

Meet The Coupon-Throwing Papa John's Owner From Hell
By Carey Alexander on June 8, 2008 1:00 PM

—>Papa John's wouldn't let reader Adi redeem her coupon for a $9.99 extra-large pizza online, so she trekked over to the nearest store in Weymouth, Massachusetts, where she met the franchise owner from hell. The owner insisted that the coupon didn't apply to online orders, so Adi asked to cancel her online order and re-order her pizza in person to get the discount. This prompted the owner to angrily throw the coupon at Adi, before throwing away her ready-made pizza. And was just the start of the fun...  More Â»

Tip: Use One Catch-All Email Address To Collect Restaurant Offers

Supermarket Trick: Wait One Month Before Using Coupons
By Chris Walters on January 24, 2008 12:20 AM

—> Trent at the Simple Dollar describes the "one month coupon strategy"—a cool trick that lets you line up coupons with in-store sales for massive discounts. Set aside grocery coupons for a month, then go through and select the ones you're interested in. Bring them to the store and you'll find that many of them are for products that are now on sale. On Trent's last visit to the supermarket, approximately 40% of the coupons matched on-sale products—in the most extreme example, he was able to purchase some ice cream for 19 cents.  More Â»

Eagle-Eyed Safeway Cashier Catches Bobbled Coupon
By Carey Alexander on November 12, 2007 1:36 AM

—>Reader Amy writes in to praise a Safeway cashier that saved her $1. One dollar might not seem like much, but it shows how little is required for someone to go above and beyond. Amy writes:

I went to my local Safeway today and picked up a package of Boboli bread that had a $1 off coupon attached. I made a mental note to remember to remove the sticker and hand it to the checkout clerk, but forgot.   More Â»

Circuit City Excluding Whatever It Feels Like From $15 Coupon
By Meg Marco on November 2, 2007 5:59 PM
After getting my items added with the sales rep on the phone, when it was time to use the coupon I was again told that it was invalid - this time, however, I was a given a reason. The sales rep told me that the coupon was not good for video games or movies (I was ordering a game and the flight of the conchords DVD). I told the rep that the coupon stated neither video games OR movies as restrictions for use and he got a manager. Three managers and supervisors later, they wouldn't budge. Needless to say, I didn't make the purchase through them. I told them that I had previously worked in retail, knew that they had the power to manually take $15 off of my purchase if the coupon wouldn't go through, and would not be making my purchase unless they honored the coupon as it was stated in their own promotion.   More Â»

    Shoebuy.com Doesn't Honor 110% Price Guarantee
By Chris Walters on October 19, 2007 4:29 PM

—>Shoebuy has a neat 110% discount policy, where they'll refund you the difference+10% if you find a lower final price (after discounts, tax, shipping, etc.) at a competitor. The only problem is, they take an insurance-claim adjustor's approach to honoring it—by which we mean, they invent loopholes to void the offer. In one reader's case, they said that because he used a discount code, his discount wasn't available to the general public. Therefore his final price didn't count, case closed, next customer please. The details of their 110% guarantee make zero mention of discount codes or coupons, or of any requirement of public availability. Shoebuy needs to change their policy if they want to take this approach; in the meantime, they should honor their commitment to this customer.  More Â»

    Are Americans Addicted To Coupons?
By Carey Alexander on September 30, 2007 1:32 PM

—>Alright consumers, Macy's heard you loud and clear: you want a good deal, not a good price. To celebrate the revelation, Macy's is proud to announce the return of the coupon. Psychological gratification is yours to clip and snip away, 15%-20% at a shot.

Despite their dowdy image, coupons remain a huge business. In 2006, companies issued 279 billion of them, or roughly 1,000 per person, up 13 percent in four years, according to NCH Marketing Services in Deerfield, Ill.  More Â»

Flatter Your Favorite Brands For Coupons
By Carey Alexander on April 15, 2007 7:24 PM

—>Faye over at "The Dollar Stretcher" doesn't wait for desirable coupons to appear in the weekly circular. She writes directly to her favorite brands asking for coupons. The results are surprising.

Since September, I have been sending emails and making toll-free phone calls to manufacturers who make the products we like. The email I send is nearly the same for each company. First, I let them know how much our family likes their product. Then I mention that I am a stay-at-home mom who needs to stick to a budget. Next, I politely ask if they have any coupons available. Finally, I thank them again for such a great product. Here are the results of my little coupon request experiment:  More Â»
