[Texarkana, Texas. August 9]
Of the misspelling, one Texarkana associate said, "I'm not surprised, it's not the first time." Perhaps the corporate overseers in Bentonville should consult the Franklin Children's Talking Dictionary & Spell Corrector.

Walmart employees can't spell? I'm shocked!
seriously, it doesn't matter if you can't spell, but at least know that vacuum one of the only english words that has 2 consecutive U's.
The sign also indicates that they have only one vacuum cleaner for sale.
How many Wal-Mart shoppers do you think actually realized it was spelt wrong? Granted, it looks bad for the company, but I doubt anyone was freaking out "I'm looking for a vacuum, but all they have are vaccums!"
They crank out walmarts so fast these days that they have no time for details. Do you know what it would cost to retool that cookie cutter?
And what about all the WalMarts they already have in inventory at the warehouse?
Forget it. Mistakes happen. No time to look back. Progress! Progress! Cheap cheap progress!
@AlteredBeast:
I'm going to have to agree with you here. I'm sure 99% of the people who walked through the store that day either didn't look at the sign or didn't notice the spelling error at all.
Who the hell cares? Why does crap like this keep making it to the main page of Consumerist? This place has gone from coving issues consumers should be aware of to checking for grammar in stores and long stories about how someone's UPS package was a day late.
slow post day or something?
Seriously, aren't there better reasons to pick on Walmart?
I can't spell "separate" correctly over half the time. So sue me
Hey! Ben's on the Today show now trashing Reputation Defender!
An all this time we thought he was laying on a beach. He does look pretty tan.
I understand that The Consumerist loves to bash Wal-Mart at every opportunity, but a single misspelling in a rural store?
i admit i have to pronounce it "vac-you-umm" in my head every time i have to type it. but at least i end up spelling it correctly.
At least it's printed, hot hand-written in pencil like the "no credit card" signs at one of my local Wal-Marts.
The WM closest to me has an aisle in the pharmacy section that includes not only "Cold" but "Flue"; I guess if you don't close the flue, you can get a cold.
Doesn't bug me as much as the sign in my local Giant grocery that says "Delly" instead of "Deli." Speaking of delis -- good delis -- we really need more Jews in the D.C. area; maybe Boca can spare a few.
Why do people constantly complain about whether a post is "worthy" or not? It's 10:45 on a Friday and I've been done with my week's work since 3:30 yesterday. This post has burned 3 minutes of my workday and for that alone, it was worthwhile.
@HeyHermano: Exactly. Plus, it made laugh a little. Nothing wrong with a "Ha! Stupid Wal-Mart!" every now and then. I enjoy it more so having been a department manager at one.
Someone is missing a question mark.
My favorite is at the local Wal-Mart in Memphis...they have a department for 'ethic' (rather than 'ethnic') hair care.
I thought the sign was kind of funny. I enjoy the serious posts here but also like the light humor too.
I find it hilarious because the Consumerist has a misspelling or missing word every other post.
And..."Delly"...that's awesome.
Hey, I love Consumerist more than anybody, but who else thinks it's ironic that Consumerist is laughing at someone else's bad spelling. ;-)
@The Bigger Unit:
Damn! Beat me to it!
vacuum is one word that i can almost never spell correctly. still, you'd think the signmaker could have looked at one of the boxes in the vacuum aisle to double-check.
@cassifras: you can spell "separate" correctly by remembering that the r separates two a's! at least that's the way i do it.
@raybury: i kind of want to open a deli called belly delly now. yeah, it might be a little bit dumb, but it's also a little bit awesome.
@Cassifras: Hell, I misspell my own name more often than not.
Ben's on the Today Show? I just figured out that I'm three degrees from Bryant Gumbel!
Living in Rogers, AR no more than five minutes from Bentonville and ten minutes from the Wal-Mart home office I don't find this all that surprising. Mistakes like this can be seen in their stores around here from time to time.
Of course, this is nothing compared to the tech stories I know of from first hand experience being out sourced to Wal-Mart and from friends of mine that worked for Wal-Mart ISD. I shudder just thinking about some of the idiotic things I had to deal with.
Dude, it's TEXAS. Its hard to spell correctly while holding a shotgun.
@The Bigger Unit & acambras: I was thinking the same thing.
@mermaidshoes: there's a 'big belly deli' in jersey somewhere.
While I hate Wal-Mart with white hot intensity, it's not just them. Spelling in general is getting *horrible*. I passed a church a couple weeks ago that told people to "come inside and get the massage". I'm not sure what the hell they're doing with Jesus. And my local dairy informs people that cows are herbivors.
It's rampant. Makes my English major soul cry.
@no.no.notorious:
I feel like a dumbass because I thought it had 2 c's as well as 2 u's.
@getjustin: Hey, I got a good idea! If you hate Consumerist, don't bother posting! Or, hell, don't even bother reading! Nobody's got a gun to your head there, whiney-boy!
I've spotted misspellings on aisle signs before. I swear, this country is collectively becoming less literate.
"Vaccum"
So it slurps up... Splooge?!
Ew. Eww. Eww!
Move along, nothing to see here....
Spelling does matter. It's imperative that we uphold the English language to the confusing standards that has made it one of the most difficult languages for people to learn as a second language.
I blame spell checkers. Seriously. I used to be able to spell, but I've become so accustomed to seeing the red squiggly underline that I've lost my spellin' skillz.
Doesn't "Country" have an O in it?
Nnnope.
They're doing this intentionally. See, they're worried that proper spelling might alienate many of their customers.
@TechnoDestructo: Bwahaha! What, Wal-Mart thinks it's too good for us now?
I judge. I am a professional spelling-and-grammar judge, and if I start making excuses for this travesty a stone's throw from the book aisle, where I know they sell dictionaries, my credibility dies. So take that, Wal-Mart. J'accuse!
@The Bigger Unit: Consumerist even has a misspelt word in this posting. Consumerist left out the hyphen in Wal-Mart [although many/most of the commmentators used it].
C'mon Consumerist you're calling the kettle black...
@The_Shadow: We never put the hyphen in Walmart.
That damned sign also gave me AIDS.
In my local megamart (not Wal-Mart), there's a sign advertising party platters. One is the "Decedent Cheesecake Tray." I've mentioned this to them several times, but they say they can't just fix one letter, they'd have to fix the whole line. Mercy. When I die, I'm taking that tray with me.
Who makes these aisle signs? I would assume it's not just some random employee. What would make it worse than say a misspelling on an Internet site such as this is that presumably these signs are made for thousands of stores somewhere and you would think THEY would spellcheck them before making them. What if an employee saw that it was misspelled when they were putting the sign up? They probably would just laugh at how stupid walmart is just like we are all doing. Not like they can go remake the sign or they get paid enough to care.
