Big Box Watch is a Google Maps mashup showing where new retail stores are being built.
They're currently tracking Best Buy, Home Depot, IKEA, JCPenney, Kohl's, Lowe's Target, and Wal-Mart. The site draws from publicly available information and user submissions.
Personally, we're hoping for some yellow balloons (IKEA) in Brooklyn. — BEN POPKEN

Folks should also be aware of http://bigboxtoolkit.com, which tracks "hot" battles against big box stores being waged by communities.
Ben, you should get ready:

They say it's coming soon.
There are kml files for google earth which do similar. I have edited on for Costco to display the locations which have gas stations.
Sorry no links but if you are interested a web search should lead to a few free relevant kml files.
GAH! Another Wal-Mart in the UP of MI. Just what we need.
How about a mash-up of stores that are closing, too?
JULIA CHRISTENSEN, an RPI MFA student, has been documenting what communities do with abandoned Big Box stores. Check it out:

Amusing. Apparently they've decided my area already has enough.
I don't think I disagree with that assessment.
We're getting an IKEA...and apparently a Costco Home Store that sells only furniture. I've never seen one of those before -- anybody know what type of furniture they sell and if it's high quality?
