By Chris Morran on May 18, 2012 12:15 PM
We've heard numerous stories about carriers for the U.S. Postal Service pilfering mail intended for others. But it seems like a lot of those stolen items just end up piling up in the carriers' homes. Here's a story of a mail carrier in California who robbed drugs intended for Peter to get paid by Paul. More »

By Chris Morran on May 9, 2012 11:45 AM
It was last July that the US Postal Service announced it was considering closing around 3,700 of its approximately 32,000 outlets around the country, many of them in rural areas. But earlier today the Postmaster General unveiled yet another plan that could keep hundreds of these offices from closing outright. More »

Another Seller Swears Off eBay Forever
By Laura Northrup on May 2, 2012 11:30 AM
There was a time, around approximately 2001, when eBay was a global marketplace where you could easily and efficiently unload items with any market value that you wanted to get rid of. Now, it's more of a global flea market full of scams and villainy. eBay and its old accomplice, the U.S. Postal Service, worked together to make Keith's old iPhone disappear into the ether. More »

Austin Realizes Not Everyone Loves Junk Mail, Gives People Way To Opt Out
By Chris Morran on April 20, 2012 5:15 PM
Contrary to the opinion of Nevada Senator Harry Reid, not everyone view junk mail as an indispensable conduit between elderly Americans and the outside world. In fact, most of us would rather do without it. That's why officials in Austin took time off from rehearsing with their ska/bluegrass fusion trios to become the latest city to give residents a way to opt out of receiving unwanted mail. More »

Senator Bums Everyone Out, Says "Elderly People Love Junk Mail"
By Chris Morran on April 20, 2012 9:15 AM
There are few images more heartbreakingly depressing than an elderly person who eagerly awaits the daily delivery of mail — even junk mail — just so they'll have something to look at that afternoon. But according to Nevada Senator Harry Reid, this is precisely why everything must be done to save the U.S. Postal Service. More »

American Airlines Voucher Disappears In The Mail, Airline Shrugs
By Laura Northrup on April 6, 2012 1:30 PM
The original copy of an air travel voucher has mystical powers, and flights can only be scheduled using the original copy. At least, that's the impression we get from Ashley's experience. When she went to redeem her voucher, she mailed it in, as required. Only the tracking number hasn't been scanned in the USPS system, and there's no sign of the voucher. More »

Package Vanishes Into Thin Air Inside The Post Office
By Laura Northrup on March 2, 2012 9:31 AM
Anthony's faith in the U.S. Postal service was clearly misplaced. He dropped off a package with a prepaid label at a local post office, with the misguided belief that it would enter the shipping system, and that the delivery confirmation barcode on the label would show the package's path through the mails. That's not what happened. What happened was that the prepaid label, with no package attached, was returned to Anthony's house. Where's the package? No one knows. But it's not the post office's problem, since there's no proof that he even mailed it in the first place. More »

35,000 Pink Slips Are In The Mail For USPS Employees
By Chris Morran on February 24, 2012 8:15 AM
As we wrote back in September, the U.S. Postal Service was looking at closing more than half of its mail processing centers around the nation, which was predicted would translate into around 35,000 lost jobs. Last night, the USPS finally announced that while some of those centers have survived the executioner's blade, the number of layoffs will remain about the same. More »

Couple Takes Advantage Of UPS Laziness, Steals Over 100 Packages From Doorsteps
By Chris Morran on December 21, 2011 12:00 PM
We've certainly written enough pieces over the years about how some UPS, FedEx and USPS carriers would rather fling your package somewhere in the vicinity of your house rather than knock and wait to see if you're home. Now the police in Somerville, MA, say a couple took advantage of drivers' willingness to leave packages out in the open by swooping in to steal the deliveries right off folks' doorsteps. More »

USPS Stops Delivering To Building Because Of Leaky Pipe

The famous oath inscribed above the entrance to the James A. USPS Holds Our Mail During Vacation, Keeps Holding It
By Laura Northrup on October 5, 2011 11:30 AM
While less and less of our crucial information comes by post now, that doesn't mean that it's okay if a few weeks' worth of it just disappears into nowhere. Especially when you're expecting presents in the mail. That's what happened to Dave's mail after he and his wife left town for their honeymoon. Expecting cards and gifts after the wedding, they requested a two-week hold on their mail. Evidently, the postal service held their mail, all right, but isn't too keen to give it back. More »

My USPS Package Took A California Vacation, Didn't Invite Me Along
By Laura Northrup on September 22, 2011 1:00 PM
Using the U.S. Postal Service's Priority Mail, Justin mailed a gift from his home in New York City to a friend in Georgia. Package tracking meant that he was able to follow the gift's journey and make sure it arrived safely. He was baffled, though, when the tracking information stated that it first traveled out to California for no reason, then made its way back to Georgia, eleven days later than anticipated. Where it was then delivered to the wrong person. In a different town. No one knows where the package actually ended up. More »

US Postal Service Swaps Box Of Love Letters For Strangers' Mail

David has saved every piece of paper correspondence that he's received from his wife during their entire life together. When shipping most of their possessions during a cross-country move, the box containing all of these cards and letters was damaged, and the contents lost. They were replaced with an awful lot of random items that don't belong to David at all. So where are David's letters? And who are the random people whose mail was stuffed in the box? More »

Ideas For Saving USPS From Bankruptcy
By Ben Popken on September 6, 2011 11:00 AM
Before it even has a chance to deliver the next letter to Santa, the US Postal Service could be bankrupt. The USPS might not be able to make a $5.5 billion payment it owes this month. Predictions of coming doom have been coming from the United States Post Office for months, with the service expected to suffer a $9.2 billion deficit this fiscal year and unable to make a $5.5 billion payment to cover employee health coverage due at the end of the month. Now the postmaster general has raised the stakes of the organization's financial crisis by declaring that it will default if Congress doesn't intervene. More »

For USPS, 'Do Not Bend' Means 'Fold Law School Diploma In Half'

How Is FedEx SmartPost So Freaking Slow?
By Laura Northrup on July 28, 2011 11:30 AM

"This is for your 11th birthday. It's what you wanted," was written on the outside of an Atlanta-bound Priority Mail box in a Minneapolis post office. They got permission to open the box and found... a four-month old poodle-schnauzer mix puppy who was very, very happy to be free. The woman who mailed the box was charged with animal cruelty, then went back to the post office to try to get a refund for the $22 in postage she paid. More »

Where To Complain About The Postal Service
