Dell Offers 25% Off Deal To Troops, Then Cancels Orders
By Laura Northrup on May 16, 2012 9:33 AM
Matthew, an Air Force veteran, saw a great deal on Dell laptops on the website of the Army & Air Force Exchange Service, a network of stores just for servicemembers. 25% off in a Mother's Day special, an impressive deal. He ordered three, because who doesn't want new, discounted laptops for their whole family? Only Dell canceled Matthew's order and those of some other customers, with no explanation. More Â»

Dell Will Sell You A 5-Year Warranty, Not Actually Honor It
By Laura Northrup on April 30, 2012 8:00 AM
M. bought a five-year Complete Care Warranty from Dell, and this somehow led him to believe that he would receive five years of warranty coverage. Crazy, right? Consumers can be so foolish. But just because the site will sell you a warranty, and documentation on the Dell site says that you have almost a year left on that warranty, that doesn't mean that you actually have that warranty, because the Complete Care warranty that includes things like accidental damage is only an add-on to the regular warranty that has already run out. Dell Tech Support Manager: 'Sell Your Computer, Buy Something Not Made By Dell'
By Laura Northrup on April 4, 2012 8:00 AM
Andrew had a beautiful and relatively modest dream as a teen. He wanted to own an Alienware gaming computer. When he became an adult, he was able to achieve that dream by purchasing a M14x laptop. There was no happy ending for the man and his computer, though. It has needed to be sent back to Dell five times already. He bought it in August. Of 2011. He hasn't even owned it for a whole year yet. More Â»

Audit Finds That Foxconn Workers Are Laboring Under Crappy Conditions
By Mary Beth Quirk on March 30, 2012 11:45 AM
While it turned out that monologuist Mike Daisey made up a bunch of stuff about working conditions at Foxconn, that doesn't mean that things there are all sunshine and roses. A recent labor audit found the giant Chinese manufacturer has working conditions that need a whole heck of a lot of improvement. More Â»

Dell Thinks That Second Hard Drive Bay Is Just A Big Hole
By Laura Northrup on March 22, 2012 8:00 AM
Spencer's Dell laptop has two hard drive bays. That's pretty cool, and he decided to take advantage of this by using it to install a hard drive. But no one at Dell has ever heard of such a crazy thing, and you can't order any of the parts needed to actually hold or connect the drive from Dell's site. Because that would be simple and easy. Dell Sends Technician To Your Office To Break Your Laptop
By Laura Northrup on March 2, 2012 10:30 AM
Experienced customer service wranglers will tell you that if you're going to buy products from Dell, buy them as a small business owner, since they get better customer support. I'd hate to see what kind of support reader Benjamin would be getting for his Vostro notebook computer if he weren't a small business owner, then. More Â»

Dell Outlet Sent Me A Barf-Covered, Gum-Filled Refurb Laptop
By Laura Northrup on January 6, 2012 11:30 AM
Frank ordered a refurbished laptop from Dell Outlet last week, and got a great deal. He hadn't anticipated that the machine would come with extras: some gum in the CD drive and an unidentified substance that we can only hope is soup, but looks more like vomit.

Why Do I Have To Hand Over My Personal Information Just To Get A Price Quote From Dell?
By Mary Beth Quirk on January 4, 2012 3:00 PM
Joe wanted to find a new battery for his daughter's Dell Mini Inspiron 9 laptop computer, as the original couldn't hold a charge, so he checked out the company's website for a replacement. He didn't have any luck, so he began chatting with a customer service rep online, which turned into one of those roundabout ordeals no one likes dealing with. More Â»

Canceling Orders Over A Pricing Error Is Not The Same As Bait-And-Switch
By Chris Morran on December 22, 2011 2:30 PM
Several times a year, the Consumerist inbox is flooded with e-mails from people who are livid because they purchased something online at a huge discount only to have the retailer cancel the order, claiming it was a pricing error and the item should never have been listed at that price. Some people are quick to call this "bait-and-switch," and state very confidently that the retailer is somehow legally obligated to honor the original price. These people are mistaken. More Â»

Dell Ditches Its Netbook Computers As Tablets Continue To Captivate Consumers
By Mary Beth Quirk on December 16, 2011 5:00 PM
Hear that? It's the dying gasp of the Netbook computer, as tablets continue to rule as the device of choice for small, portable computing needs. So clutch your Dell Mini close and tell it you love it, as the company says it isn't selling any more of the 10-inch laptops. More Â»

Michael Dell Replaces High-End Laptop Previously "Fixed" With Black Marker, Crumbs
By Ben Popken on November 4, 2011 11:00 AM
Jeremy's 3D Alienware gaming laptop from Dell didn't work right from its first bootup. It had blue screens of death and the video card needed swapping out. When he sent it in for repair, he got it back with crumbs in the keys, and a crack on the side someone tried to hide with black marker. When we posted his story on Consumerist, we gave him CEO Michael Dell's email address to go tell his story. Now Jeremy writes that after he emailed Mr. Dell, the CEO intervened and made sure Jeremy got a brand-new laptop, along with a free memory and CPU upgrade. More Â»

Consumerist Techniques Pay Off, Even With Dell
By Laura Northrup on September 22, 2011 4:00 PM
When the cooling block of Jeremy's Alienware computer began to leak, the answer was obvious: call Dell to see whether they would fix what was an obvious and pretty terrible flaw. Dell's answer was obvious in turn: tell him that the machine was out of warranty and he should go away. But Jeremy thought that a $2,500 computer shouldn't destroy itself within two years. More Â»

Alienware Laptop "Fixed" With Black Marker, Food Crumbs
By Ben Popken on September 2, 2011 3:00 PM
Jeremy's 3D Alienware gaming laptop from Dell hasn't worked right from its first bootup. It had blue screens of death and the video card needed swapping out. Get Your Free Xbox 360 From Dell For Only $100
By Laura Northrup on August 18, 2011 12:30 PM
It was probably a glitch and not a nefarious plot on Dell's part, but Chris found it odd when he tried to take advantage of Microsoft's back-to-school promo where a free Xbox comes with certain Windows laptops. Dell's site kept showing that adding on the free Xbox promo made his total $100 higher than with just the computer. Huh? More Â»

Beware Of The Vanishing 12-Month Financing Dell Deal
By Laura Northrup on August 5, 2011 10:36 AM
Catastrophegirl bought a computer from Dell during a promotion for 12 months of interest-free financing. Like a good little consumer, she had every intention of paying off the balance long before twelve months were up. Which is good, because when she checked her statement, she happened to notice that the deal suddenly became six months of no-interest financing. What happened to catastrophegirl's deal, for which she still had the original receipt? Dell basically shrugged and extended the deal to 12 months. Even if this is an error, will it trap other consumers? More Â»

Dell: Prove To Us That Your New Monitor Isn't 10 Years Old
By Laura Northrup on August 4, 2011 11:35 AM
Did you know that Dell has been making one particular model of 24" flat panel HD monitors for a decade now? G. didn't. That's why he was surprised when he contacted Dell to find out the warranty expiration date for his monitor (manufactured in March of 2011) and they couldn't provide him with that information. Worse, the confused customer service rep was convinced that the monitor was, somehow, ten years old. More Â»

Alienware Sells Marine $6,000 Paperweight, Shrugs
By Laura Northrup on July 18, 2011 3:05 PM
The Alienware Aurora ALX is a pricey, awesome gaming computer that sort of looks like a blue Cylon. Except in Drew's home, it looks more like a giant $6,000 paperweight. No matter how many extra parts Alienware/Dell try to sell him to fix the problem, the glorious beast still won't work. Drew is a Marine, and he, his family, and his computer are now stationed in Okinawa, Japan. That means transferring the warranty to Dell Japan if he wants to keep trying to get the damn thing to work. What's Japanese for "lemon law"? More Â»

Dell Warranty Provider Buys Customer New TV On Amazon
By Laura Northrup on June 23, 2011 9:30 AM
Two weeks ago, we shared the story of Tom, who bought a Vizio TV from Dell that he bought an extended warranty for, but couldn't track down the warranty company when the television actually failed. He finally got in touch with the nice people at Service Net Solutions, and they did amazed him by doing exactly what they were supposed to: replace his busted TV with a nicer one. Curiously, they did this by ordering one up for him from Amazon.com. More Â»

Letter To Michael Dell Frees College Student From Dell Hell

At the end of last semester, Alex experienced one of the great college student nightmares of our time: his Dell laptop fried itself shortly after the warranty expired. While he Fortunately, he had a few things going for him: his father had originally purchased the computer on a credit card (American Express) that extended his warranty protection, and Alex knew enough to research the specific problem. Leaky capacitors lead to device failure, and can even cause the computer to become ablaze with fire. More Â»

Corporate Lawyer To Corporations: Stop Suing Websites!
By Carey Alexander on April 4, 2009 9:00 PM

—>A well-respected lawyer has a simple message for corporations: stop suing disgruntled customers who start websites to air their grievances. Though William Pecau of Steptoe & Johnson thinks that online gripers are "self-righteous narcissists with time on their hands," he also realizes that "shutting down a gripe site generally is not easy, often cannot be done, and often is counterproductive." Pecau goes on to explain exactly why most online gripers are safe from over-hyped takedown notices...  More Â»

Dell Charges Customer $300 More Than He Authorized
By Chris Walters on April 3, 2009 11:59 PM

—>Matt is having some trouble getting Dell to sort out its billing mistake with his new TV purchase. It's an interesting story because for the most part, Dell employees or outsourced CSRs are trying to be helpful to Matt, but nothing has actually been accomplished yet over email, chat, or the telephone. Matt wants his $300 back, and Dell wants Matt to just return the TV set if he won't pay the non-discounted price. We think he may have a case here for disputing the overcharged amount.  More Â»

Dell Hasn't Refunded Money For 45 Days
By Ben Popken on February 23, 2009 10:45 PM

—>Rob bought a monitor from Dell. Not just any monitor, a defective one. Ok, he didn't specifically request it to come defective, but that's how it did. So did its replacement. "The backlight was flickering constantly and it made me feel nauseous just looking at it," writes Rob. He's returned the monitors but Dell has yet to give him back his money. Every time he calls, they tell him it will be just 7-10 days more and that he paid with two credit cards is complicating things. So far it's been 45 days.   More Â»

One Dell technician managed to dent the laptop's speaker grill. Another, dispatched to replace the hard drive, brought a drive that was slower than the model in Jim's laptop. Dell promised to send the speedier drive, but instead they sent a box labeled "hard drive" containing only a screwdriver.  More Â»

Can Dell Stop Itself From Sending Me Catalogs?
By Ben Popken on May 9, 2008 3:34 PM

—>Dell, for the love of God, stop sending me catalogs! They are annoying and unwanted, not to mention, useless. If I want to buy something from you, I'll go online. I've filled out your online forms asking you to stop. I've asked over the phone. Three different Dell executives have been in email contact with me pledging that they would investigate the mystery of why Dell is addicted to sending me catalogs. I've burnt them. I've recycled them. They continue to arrive. In my previous post on this, someone mentioned they got Dell to stop after filing a BBB complaint. Here's where you go to make one online. I just filed one, my first ever BBB complaint (Dell, see what you made me do?). It took less than 5 minutes.   More Â»

Dell Celebrates Earth Day By Sending Me Junk Mail After I Said Stop
    By consumerist.com on April 22, 2008 4:48 PM

—>Despite my repeated requests via online form and phone, and even a few posts about it, including one where I made a photo spread of burning the offending items, Dell keeps sending me catalogs. So here is another post for the online pillory, but, in celebration of Earth Day, instead of burning these catalogs, I have recycled them (see above). Their inability/indifference is all the more stupid because two different Dell execs contacted me to say they would look into the issue. They even had me email them the cryptograms on my address label to help remove me from their mailing system. Dell, please, help me save the planet and take me off your stupid catalog lists. Otherwise I guess I'll just have to deem your material "pornographic" (hey, I know it when I see it, right?) and use USPS form 1500 to get you stop. (Product) Red Responds To Dell Pricing Controversy

My name is Dave S and I purchased an Inspiron 600m directly from dell a year or two ago for $1100. The man on the phone was pushing very hard to sell me the extended warranty. I asked if he had so little confidence in the product he was attempting to sell that he insisted it would break within 30 days....  More Â»

    Dell Reintroduces Windows XP
By Carey Alexander on April 21, 2007 2:35 PM

—>After hearing from over 10,000 users wary of Windows Vista, Dell has decided to once again sell computers loaded with Windows XP. Most computer makers stopped offering XP after Vista's launch, even though many users, especially small businesses, are wary of the newfangled operating system. Dell did not consider these concerns reasonable at first.

But on Dell's IdeaStorm Web site, where visitors can post suggestions for the company and vote on the ones they think are important, a plea titled "Don't eliminate XP just yet" racked up more than 10,700 votes.

Dell Upgrades Computer By Installing Vastly Inferior Processor
By Carey Alexander on February 22, 2007 2:48 PM

—>Over at TGForumz, rdguerrero writes that Dell replaced his computer's x6800 processor with an extreme edition 955. That sounds about 7.12 times worse.

My dell computer has been giving trouble form the day i got it. finally they replaced the motherboard and processor however instead of replacing my x6800 they gave me a pentium extreme edition 955. the guy from Dell says this is an upgrade i think he id trying to pass off something on me which chip is better.
His hunch is right. One comparison declares, "Even the X6800 Core 2 Extreme which is clocked at just 2.93GHz is able to kill the 955 Extreme Edition processor pretty much all of the time." Rdguerrero, taking the sage of advice of forum members calling bs, had a nice little chat with Dell.

Man Sues Dell And Wins... By Serving Court Papers To The Mall Kiosk
By Ben Popken on December 13, 2006 12:39 AM
A NJ man successfully sued Dell in small claims court using a unique approach. He had the court papers delivered to a Dell kiosk in the local mall. When Dell failed to show in court, Pat Dori, of Hackensack won $3000 by default. A ruling allowed court employees to close the kiosk and confiscate equipment if the judgment was not paid.Dell settled out-of-court with Mr. Dori under an undisclosed arrangement. The victory came after five-months and 19 phone calls to Dell after Dori's laptop fan broke. When he turned it in for repairs, Dell lost his laptop and returned just his hard drive. To compensate, Dell offered a refurbished laptop without an extended warranty."My big issue was, they never wanted to talk to me, never wanted to hear me,'' said Dori. "The little guy found a way to hit them in the head with a rock. You get their money, you get their attention. Dell's Business Model Hinges on Crappy CSRs

—>And while we all darkly mull over the meaning of Dell's built-in keyloggers, perhaps we can cheer ourselves up by at least reminding ourselves that Dell's entire business is pretty much face down in a men's room toilet. And if the keylogging accusations are true, maybe Dell should just have its throat slit and the toilet flushed.  More Â»

—>Paul's email on getting his Dell laptop repaired under warranty is pretty dry for awhile. A top-of-the-line XPS laptop with continuing power and heat issues, necessitating the same repair over and over... a repair which, to Dell's credit, they have performed pleasantly and competently, once even when the laptop itself is out of warranty.  More Â»

From Zero To Computer Meltdown In 18 Days
    By consumerist.com on May 31, 2006 4:57 PM

—>A couple years back, when visiting my parents in Boston, my father woke me up in a flurry of panic in the middle of the night, dragging me groggily to the computer room. Pointing at the screen, he showed me numerous desktop icons that were all directed at sites specializing in fetishistic porn sites dedicated to the sexual proclivities of cartoon characters. While my father did admit to having visited these sites on occasion "for laffs", he uncategorically denied installing any software from them. He begged me to clean them off his computer before my mother could discover what had happened. Five minutes later, I was back in bed fifty dollars richer and my father had been introduced to scumware for the first time.  More Â»

Software Syncs Crappy Non-iPods with iTunes
    By consumerist.com on March 6, 2006 9:00 AM
We don't have an iPod. We have a first-generation Dell DJ. Compared to the design of the opalescent obelisk ubiquitously clutched in every hipster's hand, the Dell DJ is striking. It looks exactly as if Soviet super-scientists invented a time machine, traveled to the future, copped on to the inherently socialist nature of the music trading scene, and — traveling back to their own era — attempted to make their own mp3 player out of a two-inch plate of Soviet-grade titanium tank plating. Fifty years later, Dell.ru found about a million of these in an abandoned Muscovite silo, dusted them off, formatted "Lenin's Greatest Hits" off the hard drive and sold them as is, to idiots like probably-not-you but definitely-royal-'we'.  More Â»
