—>A study by the Green Design Institute at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh states that when comparing getting a flash drive from Buy.com versus a physical retailer, Buy.com ends up being about 30% less damaging to the environment. —>Belkin Business Development Representative Michael Bayard has been caught offering to pay anyone willing to leave perfect reviews of Belkin products on Amazon, Buy.com, and Newegg. Even worse, the highly unethical strategy seems to have worked—almost fifteen pages worth of Belkin products on Amazon have perfect five-star ratings. More »
—>Steven at The Jewish Channel ordered four hard drives from Buy.com, and got them, along with a packaging surprise. The packaging was very excessive. Each hard drive came in its a separate packing box 4591.75 cubic inches larger than the hard drive box it was meant to contain. In addition, that extra dead space was taken up by what amounted to a waterfall of brown packing paper. The containers, measuring 24" x 18" x 11.5" could each have held six of the 10.75" x 7" x 5" boxes. More pix inside. Steven writes: More »

—>Companies love rebates because they are difficult to redeem and easy to forget. But you clever shoppers are getting too good at their game, so instead of paying out your rebate in cash, you'll get something different altogether. Take, for example, Buy.com's supposed "$26 mail in rebate..." More »
—>Seth was recently contacted by Buy.com and told that due to an error, an order he placed over a year ago had a balance due. They'll be debiting his credit card "on or about 09/22/08." Seth emailed them back to ask why they were just now settling the billing issue—surely it hadn't taken them this long to notice it. Apparently, it had, and it's not just Seth's account that's messed up. More »

—> Yesterday's post about Newegg honoring a failed rebate request prompted this email from another reader, who had a similar situation with Buy.com but with a very different outcome. —>The online electronics site Buy.com mistakenly offered a $15 off *any* item coupon, a deal that was picked up by online deal forums like Slickdeals and customers rushed to place thousands of orders. Buy.com tried to stop the orders but couldn't stop them all. Those who did receive their products also received a surprise on their next credit card bill: an additional $15 charge. More »

—>Brook has waited since November for a $100 rebate from Buy.com. Each time she asks for the status of the rebate, she is told by rebate-processor Parago that the rebate is in the "final stages of processing" and will be ready, let's say, next month.
I know the warnings about rebates, but I couldn't pass this one up. Remember back in November when the Hanns-g 19" monitors had that $100 rebate? I ended up getting it from buy.com, a reputable merchant whom I thought would deal with a reputable agency to pay their rebates. WRONG.As a rule of thumb, purchase items expecting not to get the rebate. If the rebate comes through, great - treat it as a bonus. Always remember, rebate companies work very hard to deny your rebate. Parago has even admitted that most rebates are a scam. More »
—>Jerry writes in with a photo of the totally fucked up book he received from Buy.com. He realizes that it's the USPS's fault for messing up the book... but is wondering if Buy.com's packaging needs to be quite as flimsy as it is. More »
Reader Paul writes with this story of buying from a third-party through Half.com:
I've had no bad experiences buying from Half.com in the past, so when I spotted a great deal on two rare CDs I've been coveting, right in time for a nice birthday present to myself, I pounced. I noticed that the seller, tenone, was here in my home town, so first I emailed him/her to ask if I could pick up the CDs in person to save on shipping. When there was no response after a day or so, I just coughed up the postage and placed the order online anyway. He/she was a Power Seller or whatever. That was mid-October. More »
