A Midnight Sale Where Midnight Never Comes
By Laura Northrup on February 10, 2012 8:02 AM
Sloan thought that it might be worth it to stay up and online to check out an advertised midnight sale on BestBuy.com. "Midnight," in the case of this sale, meant the stroke of 12 AM on the East Coast, or 11:00 in the Central time zone where Sloane lives. When 11:00 came and went with no sale, he called up Best Buy to see where the sale had gone. They assured him that it would start up at midnight in his time zone. That didn't happen, either. More »

Best Buy Thinks A New AC Adapter Is A Suitable Replacement For Laptop Battery
By Chris Morran on February 9, 2012 4:00 PM
Back in 2008, Courtney bought an Asus laptop at Best Buy and decided that plunking down $329.99 for Geek Squad Black Tie Protection would be a good investment in case something went wrong with the computer. That extended warranty included one free battery replacement so with the clock ticking until it expired, Courtney decided to take advantage of this benefit to replace the current not-so-great laptop battery. Here Is What The New Health Insurance Labels Will Look Like
By Chris Morran on February 9, 2012 2:02 PM
Back in August, we told you about how the Dept. of Health & Human Services was finalizing a template for new health insurance labels that would attempt to make it clear what a potential customer was buying and what sort of coverage they would receive. More »

Packaging Vs. Reality: Kraft Macaroni And Cheese Cups
By Laura Northrup on February 9, 2012 12:30 PM
Jay is smart, and knows that packaged food never quite turns out the way it looks on the box. It's not physically possible. But he was surprised, when cooking a pre-packaged cup of Kraft macaroni and cheese from Costco, that the quantity of food-like substance in the cup didn't really measure up to what was shown on the box. Is he overreacting, or is this really an unrealistic portrayal of the food product within? More »

How To Win At That Stupid Claw Game
By Phil Villarreal on February 9, 2012 12:15 PM
The claw crane, also known as a UFO catcher, is presumably a reliable moneymaker for owners of coin-operated machines. The rigs taunt players by making it seem as though they're tantalizingly close to picking up a prize before letting it slip through their grasps. It takes considerable self control to keep from pouring money into the machine until victory is at hand. More »

Be A Customer Service Rep Whisperer To Get Your Way
By Phil Villarreal on February 6, 2012 11:30 AM
There are no hard and fast rules for bending customer service reps to your will. Sometimes kindness will get you far, and other times it will just get you dismissed. The same is true for being gruff and to the point. Much depends on the personality of the CSR, the power the company bestows him with and the legitimacy of your concern. More »

If You Resold A Xoom Tablet Last Year, Someone Else Might Have Your Info In Their Hands
By Mary Beth Quirk on February 3, 2012 3:00 PM
Having your personal photographs, documents, emails and passwords compromised isn't always due to a hacker or a scam — if you're one of 100 former owners of Motorola Xoom tablets resold through Woot.com last year, someone else could be holding your personal information literally in their hands. How To Make A Lowball Offer With A Straight Face
By Phil Villarreal on February 2, 2012 10:30 AM
In a tortured housing market filled with sellers desperate to unload their homes, today's lowball offers are next month's listing prices. If you're in the market for a house, you have nothing to lose by disregarding the sticker price and putting in a comically low bid for the property. Doing so as a way to start negotiations is probably the best way to see just how low the owner is willing to go. More »

There's An App To Promise Your Pals Prizes Just For Showing Up To Hang Out With You
By Mary Beth Quirk on February 1, 2012 1:00 PM
Bribery is the best way to convince your friends to hang out with you, and now there's an app for that. It's sort of like Groupon, but instead of getting a great deal, your pals might just get an especially nice compliment or a free drink if they show up to do something with you. More »

Best Buy To Use Super Bowl Ad To Try To Convince You They Know About Electronics
By Chris Morran on February 1, 2012 12:15 PM
During last year's Super Bowl, Best Buy tried to use not-at-all-a-flash-in-the-pan teen star Justin Bieber and slurring punchline Ozzy Osbourne in a failed attempt to announce its Buy Back upsell program that we've barely heard about since. For this Sunday's big ad the retailer, inspired by the death of Steve Jobs and the fact that people seemed to like him, has turned to tech innovators to convince customers it's not just a showroom for Amazon and Newegg. Best Buy To Employees: "Don't Worry About Stores Being Closed. We're Opening Stores In China"
By Chris Morran on January 31, 2012 2:15 PM
Back in January, Best Buy CEO Brian "Brooks and" Dunn confirmed reports that the electronics retailer would continue to shrink the footprint of its bricks-and-mortar stores. But a recent memo sent to employees says not to worry about those shuttered outlets because Best Buy is opening up new stores — in China. More »

How To Save While Throwing A Super Bowl Party
By Phil Villarreal on January 30, 2012 10:15 AM
If your social circle converges on your house to watch the best commercials of the year and the obligatory football that plays out in between, the burden to host a Super Bowl party can ravage your budget like University of Arizona product Rob Gronkowski does hapless secondaries. But you can cut corners here and there to trim costs without letting your frugality show. More »

My New Kindle Went Astray...Pre-Loaded With My Credit Card Info
By Laura Northrup on January 27, 2012 10:30 AM
The cloud of invisible information that surrounds is is a wonderful thing, but there are dangers as well. Brandon ordered a Kindle as a gift for his girlfriend, and upgraded to one-day shipping, but the package went astray. Amazon overnighted a new Kindle and things were glorious...until Brandon started receiving purchase confirmations of Kindle apps and content using his credit card and e-mail address. His girlfriend wasn't making the purchases. So who was? More »

Best Buy Apologizes If Your Item Doesn't Cost What It Says Due To "Technical Difficulties"
By Mary Beth Quirk on January 26, 2012 4:00 PM
So you thought you just scored a sweet deal on something at Best Buy? Sucker! It's just that they're having some problems putting the right prices on their items. You'll find that out when you get to the cash register, or from handy signs posted about the store. More »

Senator Calls Out Spirit Airlines For Trying To Mislead Public About Airfares
By Chris Morran on January 26, 2012 12:15 PM
You may recall that earlier this week, bottom-dollar carrier Spirit Airlines launched an e-mail campaign to convince customers that the new FAA regulations requiring truth in airfare advertising was really just a ruse by the federal government to hide taxes and tax hikes in airfares. Well, that didn't go over well with Senator Barbara Boxer of California, who threw off the gloves and sent a bare-knuckles letter to Spirit in response. More »
