Earlier this week, the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation announced a rule change that would cut off funding it had provided to Planned Parenthood to pay for breast exams. After a massive public outcry regarding this decision, the foundation today decided it had maybe made a mistake. More »
UPS Plays Blame Game After $5,000 Package Gets Damaged
By Laura Northrup on February 1, 2012 9:30 AM

Mike owns a small business, and he ships a lot. He mostly used UPS, and says that he probably spends $12,000 on shipping annually. Of all of the company's items to get damaged in transit, it had to be the one worth more than $5,000 that was insured, but not for the full value of the package. That's just how the world works. UPS claims that the item was damaged due to improper packaging, which is interesting because the item had been packaged at a local UPS Store. But loyal Consumerist readers know that UPS Stores are franchises, not owned by UPS. This means that UPS can blame the damage on Mike, since he's the one who paid someone else to package the item. Anti-SOPA Movement Unites Trent Reznor, Opera Singers
By Marc Perton on January 18, 2012 5:00 PM
22 Comments
While SOPA and PIPA have the support of every major record label, the unions representing performing artists, and the organizations that manage licensing for musicians, some performers, writers and artists have stood up against the bills, including MGMT, OK Go, Trent Reznor and the members of OPERA America. (And Neil Gaiman, too!) More »
Cheezburger CEO Ben Huh: Bipartisan Support Of SOPA & PIPA Smacks Of Money
By Mary Beth Quirk on January 18, 2012 9:38 AM

We've already heard the rallying cry against SOPA/PIPA, urging us not to let the LOLcats die, so we thought we'd ask the king of the LOLcats himself, Cheezburger CEO Ben Huh, to weigh in on SOPA. He explains why his sites are standing against SOPA today and how these potential laws would threaten the Internet as we know it. More »
MPAA Calls Anti-SOPA Blackouts A "Gimmick" To Punish Politicians & Turn Us All Into "Corporate Pawns"

The Motion Picture Association of America cares about you. It doesn't want children to see boobs or hear curse words (though rampant bloodshed is cool) and it doesn't want you to turn into a pawn of the big corporations that it says are really behind today's blackouts at sites like Craiglist and Wikipedia, which everyone knows are both monstrous examples of corporate greed. Google Breaks Down SOPA Opposition By The Numbers
By consumerist.com on January 18, 2012 3:41 AM

As you probably already know, a number of websites have gone silent today in protest of the Stop Online Piracy Act currently being considered by Congress and the Senate's similarly controversial Protect IP Act. And while Google, which has previously voiced its opposition to both pieces of legislation, didn't shut down for the day, it is making its feelings known to the public. More »
SOPA and PIPA Far From Dead, Despite Concerns Of White House And Changes To Bills
By Marc Perton on January 17, 2012 7:00 PM

Although the White House this weekend expressed "serious reservations" about elements of the pending anti-piracy bills SOPA and PIPA, and House leaders have said they will not conduct hearings on their bill any time soon, the legislation is far from dead. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said this weekend that he hopes to open debate on the Senate's version later this month. And House sponsor Lamar Smith said he will continue work on that chamber's version. Internet protests planned for tomorrow, in which some of the web's largest sites will go offline for 24 hours, are expected to go ahead as scheduled. More »

All David wanted to do was be a good Samaritan. When he and his family came upon a credit card in the parking lot of a rest stop, he wanted to make sure he helped out its owner as best he could. But he isn't sure if what he did to remedy the situation was the right decision. Let's all chime in, shall we? More »
Home Depot Forgot They Promised To Hang Onto My Rug Until I Decided If I'd Exchange It Or Not, Refuses Refund
By Mary Beth Quirk on January 6, 2012 2:00 PM

Marc knew for a fact that he didn't want to keep the rug he and his wife bought from Home Depot, so he was pleased when an employee was helpful enough to suggest they wait on a refund in case a new shipment had any rugs they'd like. He even offered to hang onto the rug, instead of lugging it back and forth. Unfortunately, the employee's memory wasn't so good. More »
Best Buy Screws Up Gift Return, Causes Family Awkwardness
By Laura Northrup on January 3, 2012 9:30 AM

Whenever we post a Best Buy story, commenters scold the tipster: don't they read the site? They should have known better than to shop at Best Buy in the first place! It's impossible (I hope) to blame Todd, though—his mother-in-law bought him a gadget gift there. A car dock for the wrong type of smartphone, along with a gift receipt. This should have been a smooth and simple transaction, right? Of course not. More »
Vodka Company Rationalizes How This Billboard Does Not Reinforce An Ugly Stereotype
By Chris Morran on November 22, 2011 2:15 PM

Hovering above the Upper West side of Manhattan is a new billboard for a Wodka, a brand of Vodka that apparently contains "Christmas Quality" for "Hanukkah Pricing." And while some people are none too thrilled, claiming that the ad reinforces a stereotype of Jewish people as being cheap, the people behind the billboard say it's actually all about what a great value the festival of lights is. Banks Marketing 1% APR Bank Accounts As "High-Yield"
By Ben Popken on October 4, 2011 11:00 AM

Considering how "high-yield" savings accounts used to give returns of 4-5%, reader Phil thinks it's a bit disingenuous for banks to continue marketing them as such when the rates are only 1%. He sent in a picture of a recent piece of junk mail he got from American Express to illustrate. More »

Bill Introduced To Let Robots Call Your Cellphone
By Ben Popken on September 29, 2011 3:00 PM

Since '91, it's been illegal for telemarketers to use autodialers and other robot-like devices to call your cellphone. Last week, a bill was introduced to change that. While in the past email hoaxes have gone around saying that your cellphone could be opened up to telemarketers, HR 3035 seeks to let businesses contact your cellphone "for informational purposes." AT&T Loses My iPad, Tells Me It's My Responsibility To Find It
By Chris Morran on September 12, 2011 1:30 PM

Last spring, Vik was looking around online for a deal on an iPad. He finally found a decent offer on the AT&T website so he ordered away. But by the time it had arrived, he'd decided he actually wanted a newer iPad 2. So he packed the tablet back up and shipped it back to AT&T within a couple days of getting it. He was still within the return window so he figured at worst he'd be charged for a month of data or some sort of small fee. More »
