Here's Another Way To Raise Your Voice In Opposition To SOPA
By Chris Morran on January 20, 2012 1:30 PM
Even though the Protect IP Act appears to have gotten caught in a cul-de-sac in the Senate, the Stop Online Piracy Act is still very much alive in the Congress, which is slated to take up the legislation again in February. So it's more important than ever for you to let lawmakers know you object to these heavy-handed, anti-consumer, anti-innovation bills. More »

Monster Ditches "Cable," Dives Head-First Into Overpriced Headphones
By Chris Morran on January 9, 2012 1:42 PM
At a press conference that was more pep rally than information session, the folks at Monster Cable — strike that, they are just "Monster" now — didn't show a single inch of the high-priced connectors they are (in)famous for. Instead, the company rolled out a whole host of top-dollar headphones and other products. More »

This Is Why You Should Save Your Electronics Receipts
By Laura Northrup on August 15, 2011 1:05 PM
This might be confusing, but yes, we are posting about Monster Cable, but not about them suing someone with the audacity to call their unrelated product "Monster." Instead, a Monster Cable product is involved in a cautionary tale about buying electronics from a third party with no receipt. Will bought a sealed set of Beats by Dr. Dre Touring Headphones from someone on Craigslist, who claimed to have received them as a gift and didn't have the receipt. (The item retails for about $180.) The amazing deal turned out to be slightly less amazing when the earbuds turned out to be defective, and Monster replaced them with...another defective set. Sometimes, you're better off paying retail. More »

Lawsuit: Man's Monster Energy Drink Flavored With Dead Mouse
By Laura Northrup on March 30, 2011 11:00 AM
A man in Washington state hasn't consumed a beverage from a can in more than a year. It's hard to blame him: he claims that more than a year ago, he discovered a mouse at the bottom of his Monster energy drink. Now he's suing Hansen Beverage Company, the maker of Monster. His lawyer and Monster's insurer ran tests, and independent lab results prove the mouse's identity. More »

Sony Shows Off Enough 3D Stuff To Make Your Head Explode (In 3D Of Course)
By Chris Morran on January 5, 2011 11:39 PM
Here at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, just about everyone is showing off 3D TVs. But at Sony's oversized press conference on the eve of the big expo, the company went far beyond TVs, hyping up everything from 3D cameras and handicams to laptops and self-contained 3D headsets. Here's What Happens When You Trust A Big-Box Electronics Store
By Laura Northrup on December 23, 2010 8:00 AM
Ben's father is the kind of lucrative and delectable customer that big-box electronics store salespeople love. Or perhaps they just love their bank accounts. A few months ago, Ben writes, his dad walked into an Ultimate Electronics store knowing that he wanted to buy a 3D TV, and...not much else about what he was looking for. Ben knows enough about electronics to conclude that the local Ultimate store sold his father products that he didn't need, then botched the installation. More »

Pick The Right HDMI Cables Without Getting Ripped Off
By Ben Popken on December 21, 2010 2:00 PM
Savvy Consumerist reader know that you don't need to shell out big bucks for the monstrously expensive HDMI cables some blue-shirted guy is pushing on you in order to get a good hi-def video signal. In fact, as long as you need less than 50 ft, cheap cables you can get at places like Monoprice, Newegg, PCH Cables, or Blue Jeans Cable will do the job just great. But for those friends and loved ones who don't quite get it, you might want to show this them clip done in cheezy instructional video style to help drive the message home. More »

Never Pay More Than $10 For HDMI Cables
By Ben Popken on March 31, 2010 11:38 AM
You already know that coat hangers sound just as good as those pricey Monster cables, but this infographic really lays out the full argument on why you should never pay more than $10 for HDMI cables. Whether it's gold-plated connectors, EM RF interefence shileding, or "gas injected" cables, it's all the same thing: goldbricking. There's no reason to drop $250 on a four-foot cable. More »

The Most Alarmingly Typical Best Buy TV Buying Experience Ever
By Meg Marco on November 19, 2009 9:55 PM

—>Reader David wrote in describing the level of customer service he got while spending $1,300 at Best Buy. It's about what you'd expect. But... shouldn't it be better? According to David, the salesperson didn't know basic information, like how many inputs the TV had, tried to harass him into buying a $150 Monster Cable, and then made up some nonsense about the percentage of that particular model TV that came back for repair.  More »

McCurry Defeats McDonald's In Trademark Infringement Lawsuit
By Laura Northrup on September 9, 2009 2:29 PM

—>In a victory for little guys worldwide, the Malaysian restaurant McCurry has won an epic trademark battle against McDonald's. Yes, McDonald's. McCurry has been open for ten years, and has spent eight of those fighting McDonald's. They won on the grounds that nobody could possibly ever confuse the two restaurants.  More »

Abercrombie & Fitch Threatens To Sue Merchants In Hollister, California For Trademark Infringement
By Carey Alexander on May 2, 2009 8:00 PM

—>Taking a page out of Monster Cable's playbook, Abercrombie & Fitch has threatened to sue merchants in Hollister, California who sell clothes bearing their town's name. A&F claims that local merchants putting "Hollister" on their clothes will confuse notoriously inept surfers who can't distinguish between a town and A&F's Hollister Co. line. So what happens if the locals defy the upscale bully? According to David Cupps, Abercrombie's general counsel and harasser-in-chief, "If they try, they would get a call and much more."  More »

Who Is Mourning The Death Of Circuit City? Monster Cable
By Meg Marco on April 28, 2009 4:05 PM

—>The notoriously litigious manufacturers of insanely and (some would argue) needlessly expensive cables, Monster Cable, are apparently hurting after the death of Circuit City. USAToday says that the company is slashing prices in order to increase market share.  More »

Monster Cable Misuses Engadget Quote To Sell Its Crap
By Chris Walters on April 17, 2009 8:46 PM

—>If there's any blog more anti-Monster Cable than us, it's Engadget—they refuse to review any Monster Cable products because of the company's dishonest sales tactics and legal bullying. Monster either doesn't realize that (doubtful) or doesn't care, because they pulled a quote from Engadget out of context and slapped it on the home page of the Beats By Dre site in a way that implies Engadget has reviewed and approved of Monster headphones.  More »

Monster Cable Awakens From Slumber, Sues Another Company
By Chris Walters on April 9, 2009 8:00 PM

—>Well, that didn't last long. Back in January, we were hopeful that Monster Cable had seen the error of its stupid ways and stopped suing everyone but the dictionary for using the word "monster" in their title. They were just hibernating, it seems, and now they're back and bullying another company—this time a family-owned transmission manufacturer in Florida named Monster TransmissionMore »
