I've gotta say, I'm with you on this one--what's your husband's argument for rounding the *intermediate* figure?!? Both the giver and recipient then have to deal with the change in the end, despite having gone to the trouble of a single rounding--what's the advantage?

So you concede that you've "heard" that in the US and Canada tips are expected, but deny that there is a social contract for same? Facinating. What does experiencing doublethink actually feel like? I've always wondered myself. Of course it's the contract--that's what "expected" means.

The bottom line is this: first, as you concede, the reality is that they aren't paid enough to survive without tips. Second, not tipping is such a minority practice that it won't change the wage, but simply punishes the particular person who gets stiffed. Ergo, the only people who don't tip are ignoramuses and assholes. QED, cheapskates.

My bad, they did specifically threaten him with the banhammer:
"I didn't want to risk losing some $300 games I had tied to my own account so I was saving my credit card company as a last resort. It took no less than 6 support messages exchanged to get my refund where they tried my patience continually pointing to how their Subscriber Agreement makes it OK that they can take my money, not deliver a product, refuse a refund, and as their forums implied, ban me if I protest."

Who the hell said it was? I'm just pointing out that the employee is powerless in the real world.
You tip because that's the way it's done, and it's hugely pro-consumer; you get to literally name the price of the service rendered. Only a douche would vaue it at nothing, however (absent egregious circumstances).
