I hate it when that happens. I've flown almost every size of regional plane and bought my carry-on specifically to fit all plane shapes and sizes. Every single time I board I get told it isn't going to fit. I go through the motions of putting that stupid tag on just to avoid argument and then stow it in the bin with no problems whatsoever. I don't have to cram it or anything. Fortunately my only horror story with forced gate checking was my bag getting trashed and a few small things broken.

My old landlord would come into my house to spy on me. He admitted it when I was moving out telling me that he was worried I wasn't going to get packed and cleaned in time. I asked how he knew and he said he'd been in their multiple times during the day or at night to survey my progress. After he wouldn't return my deposit (another story) he admitted to being in my house multiple times to find things I was doing wrong so he could keep my deposit. Very creepy and completely illegal. Thank goodness I live in a house now.

Every one I've attended didn't care. I told them up front I wasn't interested and they said to sign up and get the free gift anyway. They really don't care your intentions as they just want people to attend.

I do these if they offer cash or gift cards. I know they will often go over time so I factor that into whether or not it is worth it. Keep in mind you can also bargain or play hardball to get a better offer when they are signing you up. The first reward is often the lesser of the rewards they are allowed to offer. If they make your spouse attend with you then make them double the reward. The last time I did this was great. They only spent 5 minutes and gave up on me. $100 for 5 minutes is great.
