The Legal Battle Begins Over Dish's Ad-Skipping DVR

I have one problem with your post. 16 minutes is way too long for an hour-long program. 10 minutes max for me. That's what it used to be pre-1978 when there was a fixed amount of time for prime-time commercials. What a joy.

Regardless of the ad time (10 minutes or 16), I do not want any sort of on-screen text that shows channel name or the show I'm watching or the show that is coming on in 1 day. No snipes on the bottom advertising something while the show is actually being shown. In other words, other than the ads that interrupt the show, the screen must look just like a movie screen.
Give me that and then I will record things on my VCR (yes, I wrote VCR) when I won't be home or if there are two things on at the same time (you know, the original reason for time-shift recording).

Report: Judges Collect More Than $1 Million In Traffic Fines By Calling Them 'Court Costs'

Of all the roads in California, when I saw the one you mentioned, I called a friend of mine who drives from Burbank to South Lake Tahoe more times than she cares to remember. We had just spoken the other day and she was on 395 and she told me that she was being careful about the speeding. It seems that a few months ago she got pulled over for doing 70 or 80 near Walker and since the CHP officer realized that she knew where she was, he knocked it down to 'less than 10 over the limit.' It still cost her $500 between fine, court costs, and traffic school.
She agrees completely with your term of 'dipshit towns.' She also indicated that her ticket was from the county not a town, as they are not incorporated.
So, to quote from Hill Street Blues, "Let's be careful out there."

This sounds like the kind of case that Chris Elliott can handle. I don't know if the OP has contacted him, but give it a shot. His site is http://www.elliott.org/

I'm old school. I have a VCR and do the same thing. Hell, the OTA antenna is connected to a rinky-dinky vcr in my bedroom and I use a small screen tv just so I can determine the channel with the digital decoder. Once recorded, I bring the tape downstairs to my 42" plasma tv to watch and fast-forward through the 3-, 4-, & 5-minute commercial breaks.
Watching tv nowadays makes me long for the days before 1978 when the ad time in prime time was fixed to something like 5 minutes per 30 minutes.
I've become so conditioned to despise ads that I can't sit through a 15- or 30-second ad on a website. Even ads on the online shows at abc or cbs annoy me, even though they are 'only' 60-90 seconds. It's just a reflex to mute my speakers and check my email while the ads play.

If there's one channel I miss from my Directv package, it would be TCM. It's a good thing I have netflix so I can watch those classics (in the true sense of the word, as opposed to what AMC now puts out there; remember, AMC used to mean American Movie Classics. It became dead to me once they added ads).

One thing that has always bugged me about the app is that huge blob in the lower right corner. Does the app show it? If it doesn't then be sure to compose your photo knowing that the lower right corner is going to have the channel logo on it and make the necessary adjustments.
/end of get-rid-of-channel-logos rant

p.s. yes, I know that consumerist is not a channel, but still, why so big?

Wait, Bing411 is going away? I will have to look into that. Not that I call it too often, but it's good to know it is (or was) there.
I have another number, 800-FREE-411 (requires listening to a short ad). Never tried them though, so I can't vouch for the availability or reliability.

As someone who just served this week (Monday & Tuesday) this story is somewhat current for me. As the court officer started his opening monologue (yeah, he was a funny guy), he explained that if your juror number was over 2900 (IIRC), then you weren't supposed to be there Monday morning. Guess what. There were 2 or 3 people who got up and walked out. So much for listening to the instructions as to when to report.
I don't know what I said (or if it was how I said whatever I said) but during yesterday's voir dire, I didn't get picked. So, for 2 days of service, $80. I will try to not spend it all in one place.
