Is this all pining for the days of Mom and Pop? I am a yield whore. That typically means I use online banks. They, in my experience, have had good customer service reps and much better rates due to the decreased overhead.
That said, a local bank in a bit of regulatory trouble started offering a checking account APY of almost 5% in an effort to attract deposits. Because of that (and FDIC coverage), they got me as a customer.

For all the Honda folks commenting, I know that my 1999 Accord has the 5-digit code printed on a non-descript sticker placed on the inside of the trunk lid. I'm guessing that other models have something similar.
