Why Did Hunt's Ketchup Go HFCS Free?
My thoughts exactly. I avoid it to try to vote with my dollars to try to promote the diversifying of American farmers.
Oakland Is Out Of Weed, City Council Declares
It's a silly world we live in when deadly and toxic products like alcohol and tobacco are legal - when people are regularly, permanently damaged or die from federally regulated chemical drugs prescribed by medical professionals - all while we are not allowed by the government to grow a plant.

I got set up with a brand new community garden. We've been hauling dirt for weeks now. There's supposed to be 18 inches of dirt covering the entire thing (about a square city block).
Tomorrow should be the last day of dirt moving, maybe some planting will happen on Sunday if it doesn't rain.

Comcast: We Don't Want To Be Worst Company In America Again
Heh, I wonder how hard it was to choose between a "Worst Company In America" tag and a "Taking it Seriously" tag.
VIDEO: Store Clerk Learns He's $258.5 Million Powerball Winner
There's a story on This American Life where a guy got a job 'buying out' the people who did the yearly increments.
So, you get the yearly increment, buy a house, a car, a boat, some flashy pants, and some sweet sunglasses and realize you can't afford it, even though you have all of this money coming your way. (a lot of people actually opened restaurants or bars which inevitably failed due to lack of business experience).
Next your in over your head and you need money, any money, really quickly. So you accept a buy-out of 10 Million for a 50 Million jackpot, just because you're in deep right now. It was sad, really

Here's the official description:
Act Two. Show Me The Annuity.
This American Life producer Alex Blumberg talks with Ed Ugel, who had a very unusual dream job: he bought jackpots from lottery winners. When you win the lottery, your prize is often paid out in yearly installments. And Ed would offer winners a lump sum in exchange for their yearly checks. He's talked with thousands of lottery winners, and the vast majority, he says, wish they'd never won. Ed is writing a book about his years in the "lump sum industry" called Money for Nothing: One Man's Journey through the Dark Side of Lottery Millions. It comes out in September 2007.
Save Money On Haircuts
I'd be very, very weary about becoming a hair model. I dated an assistant stylist for a while, and the idea is that they need to practice on people in front of a "real stylist". This makes the assistants nervous, jittery, and slow.
The whole world of being an assistant and going through this BS is to be completely torn apart by the "real stylist" - told that everything is wrong, they are terrible at cutting, and are not ready to be 'on the floor'. Of course the stylist will say this! They want to protect their job! They really just need an assistant around to shampoo heads and sweep the floor for cheap, guising it under an 'assistantship' or 'apprenticeship'. It's a bullshit scam to get cheap labor.
Regardless, because of all of this pressure, the assistant will likely not do a great job. You will probably have little choice of the type of haircut because the assistant needs to 'prove' they can do XXX kind of haircut. (The graduated bob is a classic) Also be prepared to be stood up, as suddenly the 'real stylist' will be booked and won't be able to over-see the assistant.

What's The Sickest Thing You've Ever Done To Save Money?
I guess the more I think about it, the less I feel like I've done to save money and the more crazy things I've done to make money when I had none.
The best one?
Picking up free stuff on craigslist and re-selling it.
