thank you, thank you, for writing this. i'm one of the handmade vendors at the bk flea, and as a group we artists speak about this all the time. it's really upsetting, insulting, when people want to bargain on my art, and i won't do it. occasionally, if someone buys a large amount, i'll throw something in as an incentive.

i wish buyers knew how how hurtful their comments about the prices of our work are.

i called AAA about locked keys in my car and they had a local person call. i was given a price. guy came and said he needed "special tools" so it cost me about $100 more for him to use a "balloon" thing to make a space for him to shove a hanger through. stupidly didn't get a receipt, and no amount of fighting with AAA got that $$ back.

it's hard to think straight when you're freaked out and feeling vulnerable/threatened. worse, if the police are there.

in NYC on a holiday weekend? you'll be in the tombs for at least 24 hours. i know people who were stuck in there for the weekend, with no phone call, for riding a bike on the sidewalk

#4, steel door, not true. i recently had to replace what i thought was a steel fire door (was just metal with wood inside) and could not find anyone in brooklyn to do this. residential apartments do not have steel doors.

as a person who shows only 2nd hand (other than socks and undies) goodwill's pricing structure is far higher than the salvation army. they have set prices for most items, but shoot up prices for particular pieces they deem worthy.

and no, volunteers are not doing the pricing. not there, not at salvation army, not at red white and blue. (and at the latter they have "discovered" cashmere, a development that broke my heart.)

plus, i'd lived in my old place for 14 years, i'm a pack rat, and i was moving to a new city away from my family. in my head i had visions of me sitting on the floor crying, surrounded by dust and pennies.
