We May Be Entering The Oxycontin Baby Era
I'm currently on Kadian (time-release synthetic morphine) and immediate release oxycodone (generic oxycontin) for serious wounds on my foot.
My doctor prescribed them several months ago for a similar (but much worse) wound on the same foot after I tried all the other less effective options.
This time, she prescribed them right away, and I can't thank her enough for it.
I went through narcotic withdrawals the last time, but I knew there would be a relatively minor price to pay for the pain relief.
This time, I'll know to ask for some help with the expected withdrawals.
It is so nice to have ready access to a doctor who knows me and knows that I will not abuse or sell my medications, so that I can get effective pain relief when I need it, without having to beg.
Bikini-Clad Walmart Shopper: I Was Booted From Store And Told I Was Violating Health Codes
Wow, so people who aren't attractive in your opinion shouldn't wear certain clothes? Excuse me, I forgot for a moment what country I was living in, and you must have as well.
If you don't think they look very palatable, then don't look at them!
You have no right to "suggest" that people not wear certain clothes.

I feel so lucky to have a credit card from my old CU. 12.99% fixed rate, and the same rate for cash advances.
Please people, quit giving heartless banks your money, and give it to institutions that actually give a damn about their customers!

How To Make Your Home More Environmentally Friendly On The Cheap
Hey Consumerist Phil - I can see how you might have thought this "article" would be something good to post. After all, it is somewhat relevant to consumers, as it might help some to save money. Though I personally fail to see how it furthers Consumerist's agenda, which is summed up in the site logo "Shoppers bite back".
I agree with Sniveler - I've read these same tips for the lsat several years, and they're the same tips 95% of the time. If you're going to crib this post from another blog, at least add your own original tips to it to justify it!

Rent-A-Center Responds To Predatory Lending Infographic
Let me first say that I am fully in favor of financial reform. The system is broken and we dearly need to fix it.
I see a positive place in the economy for Rent-to-own businesses. (RAC, Aarons, etc.) While the items they sell are luxuries and the by the week payments will certainly result in you paying 2 to 3x the retail value of the items..
The fact remains that these types of places serve a purpose in the economy.
One, they employ people. With a profit margin of 5.8%, I'm surprised they don't go out of business. I also thought it would have been much higher.
Two, they teach customers how to use credit responsibly. Getting your stuff repossessed is embarrassing, and they make it known that if you let your obligation lapse with no notice to them, they'll come take the items back. Last I knew, if you have an honest problem paying for the items - Say your paycheck goes missing in the mail and you have to wait for a re-issue - They will work with you, usually by adding the missed payment to the life of the loan, extending it by one week. As another poster said, once you successfully pay for an item through these places, it is reported as a positive on your credit report.
Three, while the items they offer are most definitely luxuries, things that people can do without - Have any of you considered the effect that say, having a nice computer (to them, at least) means to them? The desire to keep these items and successfully pay them off and therefore join a slightly better class of living can sometimes be a very powerful motivator to keep a job and work on bettering their situations.
While there are many places preying on vulnerable consumers, I don't think rent-to-own places can be placed in that category. They have too many positives, and frankly, a 5.8 profit margin just doesn't seem like they're ripping people off.

FCC Wants To Know If It Sometimes Might Be Okay To Jam Cellphones In Interest Of Public Safety
I gotta say, the thought of the gov jamming cell phone signals (or all EM signals in a certain radius) is very un-nerving. Not only are there ominous free speech inhibition or police brutality undertones, but I'd like to add a couple more wrinkles.
I use a power wheelchair in daily life. The owner's manual has a giant warning about keeping a 2-way radio (such as a cell phone) away from it while the chair or the radio is powered on. Like an idiot, I disregarded it. What's out there today that a cell phone could interfere with? Long story short, I was chatting it up with a friend, and my chair shot forward and wrecked 3 tables in a mall food court. Which was quite a thing, since my hand wasn't on the joystick when it moved. Bruised my shins, freaked me out. I reported it to the company and my DME dealer, they reiterated the RF interference warnings in the manual, and said they'd look into it. Nothing more. Other manufacturers all have similar warnings. I asked what the distance threshold was, and I was told "within 1 foot or less of the hand control or main computer, or any power seating system controllers you may have". I am now very careful to make sure my chair is turned OFF when I have to gab.
Any jamming devices could easily cause my chair to go nuts if the planets align just so, depending on how strong they were. Cell phones today are less than 1 watt, how strong would a jamming signal be?
Also, what if I (or anyone else that needed help) couldn't get it? It ha happened before that I'd be driving down the sidewalk tilted back, a few degrees away from hitting my chair's drive inhibit point. I hit a steep hill or curb cut, the inhibit kicks in, and my chair loses 80% of its power at the worst time, on a steep incline. Thankfully, that only happened once. So far. And the brakes do lock if I turn the chair off. But I had to call for a nearby friend to come push my chair out, as I couldn't do it.
Also, another thought - Can you imagine people demanding compensation from these outages, or more lawsuits from it? I can. Sad fact of living in the USA.
Leave cell phone jamming alone. Build Faraday cages into the walls of wherever you need to keep signals out of, such as prisons, and leave it at that.
