Gay Couples Lose Big On Tax Breaks Because Their Marriages Aren't Recognized

Might I offer a friendly amendment? People aren't "given" rights. People HAVE rights, by virtue of being human. It's an inalienable part of who we are. Consequently what we have are people who want to deny the essential humanity of others by not allowing them to marry the people they love. Let's make sure we keep the burden and blame where it rightfully belongs--on the people who would diminish others for their own ostensibly bigoted reasons.

GM CEO Thinks $1 Increase In Gas Price Would Do Us All Some Good

It helps you indirectly by convincing other people to make choices similar to yours. Would you be safer in your smaller car if there were fewer Suburbans and other giant SUVs and pickups on the road with the potential to completely crush you? Would the price of gasoline remain high if more people drove more fuel efficient vehicles? Would you benefit from less pollution if more people drove newer, less polluting cars instead of their old clunkers?

There are lots of indirect benefits. Unfortunately there are also lots of indirect costs. As long as the US ships the bulk of its goods by truck an increase in the gas tax will ripple across the economy, increasing the price of food and just about anything you can buy in a store.

On the whole, I side with the guy from GM. We need higher taxes to dig out of the fiscal hole we're in. As to $5/gallon gas I don't see our friends north of the border suffering too much. They already pay that much.

I live in Seattle. I keep getting letters from scumbag realtors saying stuff like: "Is your home worth less than it's worth? Are you behind on your mortgage payments? Contact us! We can help arrange a short sale of your property."

Sorry, but no. The day to day value of my home is irrelevant. I like it and I plan to live here a long time. My mortgage is fixed, and since I could afford it when I bought it I still can. Nothing has changed. I despise blood suckers who try to capitalize on media hype in the hope of suckering the less sophisticated. The sky is not falling, people.

This reminds me of one of my favorite stories. While attending a redneck friend's wedding about 25 years ago I was told in no uncertain terms to stay away from the bride's brother. Turns out he's a racist that hates blacks, as well as a sheriff's deputy. The rest of my redneck friends weren't too happy about this. One of them went so far as to proclaim: "If he even looks funny at MY nigger I'm going to shoot his ass!" Hmm...

Later, while going through the reception line with said redneck friends the mother of the bride was introduced to each one in turn. Until it was my turn, where she said "And you must be _____". My reply? "How did you guess?"

My redneck buddies are a mean lot. Since the now brother-in-law of my friend was told to stay away from me they made sure I camped out near the buffet table so the he couldn't get food during the reception. Still, I decided to keep the outrage down to a minimum by declining to dance with the bride.

I'm so looking forward to seeing these guys when I go home for Christmas next week. Good times...

Unless the officer in question witnessed the damage of all of the cars in the chain reaction collision *there at the scene* there is no way the damage to the rear of the second car can be attributed to you. There may have been pre-existing damage to the second car.

It's time for you to personally get a copy of the police report and lawyer up.
