Dispute Credit Histories When Companies Combine

happymergerboy.jpgThe best time to dispute erroneous credit report items is when companies merge, says reader Thomas. It's a little gray hat but hey, power to the people. Thomas writes:
"I've found that the best time to clean up problems in credit history is when companies merge with or are bought out by other companies. Frequently, a lot of the payment history details are lost when IT systems are merged. I had a student loan I didn't realize was back in repayment, and it caused me problems for years. Then that student loan company was acquired by another. For the third time, I disputed the information and it was deleted because the new company was unable to provide any details or evidence."

Restaurant Rounds Up to the Nearest Nickel?

Maybe this is something new that we're missing out on, but since when is there a "rounding" charge? This restaurant in Brooklyn rounded up $.02 to make this bill an (even?) $22.95. Uh, what? Maybe it's part of the war on pennies. —MEGHANN MARCO More »

H&R Block Leaves Guy With $3100 Bill

Travis used H&R Block's On-Line Tax Help last year, and due to an error on H&R Block's part...he's been hit with a $3100 tax bill for a deduction he took but was not qualified for. Travis didn't pay the extra $29 bucks for the "Peace of Mind guarantee", so Travis will be responsible for the bill. Whoops. H&R Block's included "Accurate Calculations Guarantee" covers "penalties and interest caused by such error." More »

Delete Negative Items From Your Credit Report

Recently we checked out our credit report and were surprised to see a $500 unpaid charge. It was from a video store we frequented in college. (We could've sworn we returned Wicker Man....) The video store had never sent us any notice and the debt was sold to a collection agency, who had also never contacted us. Odd. More »
