Woman Loses Home Over $68 Dental Bill

Maybe there are no more debtors' prisons, but that doesn't mean your life can't be screwed up by unscrupulous collection agencies.

Sonya Capri Ramos says her Salt Lake City home was sold out from under her in 1996 to pay a collections agency seeking payment for dental work performed on one of Ramos's daughters. And despite the fact that she had made three years of payments on a $51,000 mortgage, the title changed hands for just $1,550 at a sheriff's auction.

Will June 29th Be A Big Cluster#@$! For Airlines?

Matt writes in to warn us all not to fly on June 29th and 30th if we can help it, because the 29th is when flight plans for all domestic flights have to switch over to the international standard. Matt adds that it's just his personal opinion, so we're not sure how worried we should really be (remember the fake-out of the Y2K bug?). But then again, we're talking about airlines, so at the very least you should pack some extra energy bars if you're traveling on the day of the switchover. More »

Department Of Transportation Says Airlines Can't Charge Extra Baggage Fees After Ticket Purchase

The Secretary of Transportation announced earlier this month that airlines shouldn't surprise consumers with extra baggage fees after they've already purchased a ticket:

Passengers should know what to expect, and what to pay, before they buy a ticket or pack their bags, which is why we are calling for carriers and travel agents to disclose baggage fees in their internet and print ads before anyone purchases a ticket.  We also are making it clear that airlines may not impose increased fees or new restrictions for baggage after a passenger has bought a ticket.

Poll: Can You Drive 55? Should We Bring The National Speed Limit Back?

Remember the 55 mph speed limit? Remember... ignoring it? Wired's Autopia blog is wondering if we should consider bringing it back. Back in 1974 Congress passed the National Maximum Speed Law, and threatened to cut funding to any state that didn't comply with the new 55 mph maximum speed limit. Theoretically, forcing everyone to drive slower increases fuel economy, and the oil embargo had people stressed. But did the lower speed limit work? Did we save gas? More »

To Avoid Billions In Lawsuits, Cellphone Companies Propose Tepid Early Termination Fee Reform

In exchange for amnesty from a series of potentially billions of dollars in class action lawsuits over early termination fees (ETFs), the cellphone companies have proposed some namby-pamby ETF reforms to the FCC. Their ideas:

  • Pro-rating early termination fees, so the cancellation fee goes down every month
  • Customers can cancel without ETF up to 30 days after singing contract, or 10 days after receiving their first bill
  • The overall fee would be slightly reduced

Cellphone companies main justification for early termination fees is that they have to recover the costs of selling cellphones at a discounted rate. True, but why then do I get charged an ETF if even if my cellphone was bought off eBay?
