Southwest Airlines Surprises Bride-To-Be With Airport Wedding Shower

Southwest Airlines showed their romantic side Wednesday by hosting a wedding shower at the Baltimore Airport.

Last November, Southwest Airlines played host to a wedding on a flight from Nashville to Dallas. The company continued its foray into all things matrimonial this week when it surprised one passenger with a wedding shower.

The Baltimore Sun reports that more than 100 passengers, crew members, airport staff and family members surprised the bride-to-be when she exited the gate at the Baltimore Washington International Airport.

The event, which included 40 dozen roses, a champagne toast and a personal note from Southwest CEO Gary Kelly, was more than five months in the making for the airline and the woman’s fiancé.

It all started last October when the groom-to-be asked Southwest ticket agents for extra “fragile” stickers for his checked bag because it contained champagne he hoped to drink after purposing to his long-distance girlfriend during a trip to Maine.

“The next thing you know, I’m talking to these five Southwest employees,” he tells the Sun.

After carefully dropping off his bag, the man says a ticket agent handed him a $100 voucher and a wish of good luck.

The couple did indeed get engaged on their trip to Maine. And upon returning to the Baltimore area, the man wrote a letter of thanks to the airline for making the experience so special.

That’s when the airline took things to the next level. Soon the man was working with employees to host the surprise wedding shower, which included making preparations to fly in the bride-to-be’s mother and sister for the occasion.

While most betrothed couples wouldn’t dream of having a wedding shower at the airport, the man says he wouldn’t have it any other way.

“It’s kind of funny because our relationship has evolved so much around airplane flights,” he tells the Sun.

There’s no word yet on whether or not there will be another mid-flight wedding in the future.
