Report: Twitter & Google Make A Deal To Show Tweets In Search Results

Now that Google has realized Google+ is likely never going to compete with Twitter on a social media level, the two companies have once again reached a deal that will allow tweets to be more searchable online. Starting in the first half of this year, tweets will show up in Google search results as soon as they’re posted, according to a new report.

The agreement gives Google access to Twitter’s firehouse, which is the stream of data generated by its 284 million users tapping away and letting the world know all their thoughts in 140 characters or less, reports Bloomberg, citing insiders in the know.

Before now, Google had to crawl Twitter for information, which will now show up automatically. But because not everyone uses Google (?) it’s important to note that people searching the Internet using Bing or Yahoo! search could already get Twitter results.

Sources tell Bloomberg that engineers from both companies have already started working on the deal.

Google and Twitter did have another deal to have Tweets show up in searches back in 2009, but Google let that contract lapse after it started to push its Google+ service. Which would make it seem like even Google has thrown in the towel on that one.

Twitter’s former chief operating officer Ali Rowghani had also been against renewing the agreement, in order to keep more control over Twitter’s content.
