Police evacuated a Florida mall this week and kept it on lockdown after someone threw a powdery substance into a Lenscrafters store. The mysterious grains weren’t anthrax or ricin — nay, none of those dangerous toxins. But that doesn’t mean it was a pleasant powdered sugar party: Police say a man was scattering the ashes of his fiancée.
The cremated remains prompted 25 police officers and 10 fire trucks to race to the scene and shut down the mall for two hours, reports the Sarasota Herald-Tribune.
A police spokeswoman says the man was upset over the recent death of his fiancée, but it’s unclear why he would chuck the ashes into an eyewear store.
“He walked into LensCrafters with the ashes of his deceased fiancee, threw a handful into the store and left,” the spokeswoman said. “He had no idea what he had done. She passed away not long ago.”
He won’t be charged for distributing human remains in a public place, notes the spokeswoman, and instead will be offered grief counseling.
