Don’t you just hate that sinking feeling you get when, well, the resort you’re vacationing at sinks into the ground? It’s no fun getting away only to have the villa get away from you. Guests at a resort villa in central Florida had to evacuate on Sunday night, just hours before a sinkhole swallowed up 30% of the structure.

From what the Associated Press reports, it appears that no guests were injured during the incident, which started on Monday night. It all went down (literally, get it?) over the next few hours, culminating in a large section of the three-story building collapsing by 3 a.m. on Monday. There was another section sinking as well, said a fireman.

A whole of shaking and cracking went on beforehand, which was a good enough warning to guests to get out of the villa.”I started walking toward where they were at and you could see the building leaning and you could see a big crack at the base of the building,” said one guest, who said the lights went out around 11:30 p.m., prompting him to go to the front desk. That’s when he saw police and firefighters outside.

Another guest thought the commotion was perhaps caused by carousing kids racing down the hall. Not so much.

“Next thing I know, people are yelling ‘get out of the building, get out of the building,'” she said.

THe development’s president says 48 three-story units are done for, out of a total of about 900 units spread over a large area. The 15-year-old building underwent geologic test when it was built, and before the collapse, there were no signs of an impending sinkhole. His guess is that the sinkhole is about 40 to 50 feet in diameter, but it’s unclear whether or not it’s still growing.
