Netflix To Start Making Documentaries & Stand-Up Comedy Specials

Netflix is continuing its move from the ugly duckling it used to be back in the Qwikster days toward the kind of HBO swan it seems to want to be lately, by offering original series like House of Cards and the new Arrested Development that proved popular with users. Next up? Documentaries and stand-up comedy specials.

The new programming will include “broadly appealing feature documentaries” and comedy specials, said CEO Reed Hastings and CFO David Wells in a letter to shareholders, via Variety. “Netflix has become a big destination for fans of these much loved and often under-distributed genres.”

“Over the last six months, our move into original programming has begun to redefine Netflix in the eyes of consumers,” Reed and Hastings wrote.

This likely won’t be the last foray into content expansion, as the next natural step would be to possibly air live entertainment like sporting events or concerts. The world is an oyster and Netflix is an adolescent swanling and do swans even eat oysters? We’re not sure, but it’ll be interesting to see how things continue to pan out.
