Louisiana Company Recalls 468,000 Pounds Of Meat Over Listeria Concerns

There’s a whole lot of meat on the table after a Louisiana meat-packing company extended a recall of 468,000 pounds worth of roast beef, ham, turkey breast, tasso pork, ham shanks, hog headcheese , corned beef and pastrami. Quite an awful lot of sandwiches.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture says Manda Packing Company issued the recall over concerns that products have been contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The products were sent to retailers in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas.

No illnesses have been reported yet, but consumption of food that’s been tainted by listeria can cause listeriosis, a potentially fatal disease.

According to the Food Safety & Inspection service, the affected products were produced at the plant between Feb. 27 and April 9, with various “sell by” dates depending on the product. However, some products might’ve been sliced at retail delis so won’t have packing information displayed on them.

The Tennessee Department of Agriculture caught on to the possible contamination after taking a sample of cooked roast beef at a retail location on April 5. It later tested positive for listeria.

Media and consumers with questions about the recall should contact Josh Yarborough, Director of Quality Assurance and Food Safety, at (225) 344-7636, ext. 59.
