Listen, Washington residents. We’re sure some of you are pretty darn excited now that marijuana is on the up-and-up in your state, but that doesn’t mean you can just drag your pipes and vaporizers out of the closet and into the local watering hole. There are still rules that need to be set up governing such things, and the state’s Liquor Control Board says some bar patrons are getting ahead of themselves.

There aren’t even pot shops open yet in the Northwest, but there’s still a law on the books that prohibits public use of marijuana in any establishment — especially the ones that sell liquor. Which is why officials are ticked off that at least two bars are allowing patrons to smoke up, vaporize or eat pot on the premises, reports Q13 News.

“It is important that the Board clarify now that consuming marijuana in a state liquor-licensed establishment is not acceptable,” Board Chair Sharon Foster said Wednesday. “Public consumption of marijuana is clearly illegal under Washington’s new law.”

Reportedly the two bars involve have allowed patrons to smoke pot or, so as not to produce smoke, vaporize it. One bar requires patrons to sign up for a pot smokers membership in order to make the bar a private club.

As the law stands now, the customers should be getting a $103 fine for a class 3 civil infraction. The new rules the board is working on would strictly prohibit bars from allowing marijuana consumption on the property and the businesses would get fined for breaking that rule.

Those who want a voice in how the liquor board tackles consumption at liquor licensed locations are in luck, as it’s taking public input on the topic. Just make sure not to take the vaporizer along to any of those meetings.
