If You Can’t Find Cigarettes In NYC Soon It’ll Be Because Mayor Bloomberg Hid Them

Just like Chumbawamba, when New York City Mayor Bloomberg gets knocked down, he gets up again. Not one to let that pesky judge’s ruling that his ban on large sugary drinks was invalid bug him, Bloomie’s got his sights retrained on anti-smoking efforts. His plan? Just hide all the cigarettes.

Bloomberg is proposing the “Tobacco Product Display Bill” as a way to prevent even more people from smoking, after touting his administration’s successful efforts at reducing smoking.

The New York Post says the bill would require all stores that sell cigs to keep them out of plain view, whether it’s covered with a curtain, under the counter or otherwise hidden. Buyers would only see the cigarettes during the purchasing process.

“Young people are targets of marketing and the availability of cigarettes and this legislation will help prevent another generation from the ill health and shorter life expectancy that comes with smoking,” Bloomberg said in a prepared statement.

Bloomberg claims this would be the first law of its kind in the nation.
