Mmm, popcorn.

Mmm, popcorn.

Good afternoon, class. It’s time for yet another lesson in “Do The Math Before You Pick Which Package Of A Product To Buy.” Today’s example comes from Consumerist reader Brian, who spotted various price options at his local Walmart for microwave popcorn. Three identical products in three different options, but which one to buy?

As seen in the above photo and the one below, you can buy a pack of three Pop Up Bowl Popcorn from Orville Redenbacher for $3; a pack of six for three cents less at $2.97 (which is a no-brainer right there — double the popcorn for less money? — or a pack of 10 for $6.97 which could be tempting.

Not gonna buy you, 3 for $3.

Clearly, $1 per popcorn bowl is out, sorry three-pack. The six-pack comes down to $0.50 per bowl while the 10-pack will cost you $0.70 per microwave visit.

Each pack features the same size bags, 82g, writes Brian, adding, “Needless to say, I was confused.”

Don’t be confused, dear readers. Just read the labels and do the math to get the best deal. Let retailers be the ones confused as to why they’ve priced identical products in such an odd way.
