Fisher-Price Recalls 800,000 Newborn Rock ‘N Play Sleepers Seats Because They Might Be Moldy

Fisher-Price has issued a recall of about 800,000 of its Newborn Rock ‘N Play Sleepers due to an insidious problem that could be growing right under customer’s noses: mold. The company and the Consumer Product Safety Commission are warning consumers to stop using the sleepers if they spot mold on it, particularly in between the removable seat cushion and the hard plastic frame of the product.

The CPSC says the grody stuff can grow if the item gets wet and stays that way or isn’t cleaned well. Nobody wants their sweet slumbering baby to be exposed to mold, as it’s been linked to respiratory illnesses and other negative effects on health.

The recall doesn’t include units still on the shelves in stores, as the mold only grows after the sleepers have been used/dunked in liquid/allowed to get dirty. According to the CPSC, there have been 600 complaints of mold, with 16 customers reporting that their babies had to be treated for things like coughs or hives after sleeping in the sleepers.

Consumers are advised to immediately check for mold under the cushion to inspect for dark brown, gray or black spots. If it’s there, stop using it and contact Fisher-Price at (800) 432-5437 or http://www.service.mattel.com for cleaning tips or any other questions you might have.

Anyone who needs to report an injury or ill health effect related to the product can tell the CPSC about your experience at SaferProducts.gov.
