According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, Amazon.com, Buy Buy Baby, Diapers.com and Toys R Us/Babies R Us have all chosen to recall the Nap Nanny because the manufacturer has been “unable or unwilling to participate in the recall.”
The recall includes the Nap Nanny Generations One and Two, and the Nap Nanny Chill model infant recliners.
The story of the Nap Nanny goes back to 2010, when, following the death of an infant while seated in a Nap Nanny, the CPSC and the manufacturer Baby Matters, LLC, issued a joint recall that offered a discount coupon to Generation One owners toward the purchase of a newer model Nap Nanny, and improved instructions and warnings to consumers who owned the Generation Two model of Nap Nanny recliners.
Despite improvements to the Nap Nanny’s warnings and instructions, the CPSC continued to hear of additional deaths and received dozens of incident reports involving children nearly falling out of the product.
In advance of the CPSC lawsuit, the founder of Baby Matters shut down the company. However, she has claimed that she has been cooperative with regulators and that at least four of the five the fatal incidents involved the Nap Nanny being used inside of a crib, when the sewn-on instructions for the Nanny direct users to only place the item on the floor.
If you still have a Nap Nanny, you should contact the retailer from which it was purchased to arrange a return.
