The garage at your local Honda/Acura dealer might be a bit busier in the coming months, as the car maker has issued a recall for certain model years of Honda Odyssey and Pilot vehicles, along with hundreds of thousands of Acura MDX vehicles, over concerns the ignition interlock could fail, causing the cars to possibly roll around when they’re not supposed to.

The recall involves around 318,000 Honda Odyssey and 259,000 Honda Pilot vehicles, all from model years 2003-2004. The Acura portion of the recall is for 230,000 Acura MDX vehicles from the 2003-2006 model years.

According to Honda, the ignition interlock mechanisms in these particular vehicles can be damaged or worn during use. “If this happens, it may become possible to remove the ignition key when the automatic transmission shift lever is not in Park,” reads a company statement. “If the transmission is not in Park and the parking brake is not set, the vehicle could roll away, and a crash could occur.”

The car maker says it has received several complaints about such malfunctions and that it knows of a “small number of related incidents, including two that allegedly resulted in minor injuries.”

Honda will begin notifying affected customers by mail in early Feb. 2013. At that time, owners of vehicles that might be included in the recall can also go online to www.recalls.honda.com and www.recalls.acura.com or call (800) 999-1009 [Honda owners] or (800) 382-2238 [Acura owners] and then selecting option “4.”
