Bring On The Twinkiepocalypse: Hostess & Union Unable To Kiss, Make Up In Mediation

It seems like only a few days ago that Hostess and its striking union were agreeing to a judge’s suggestion that they try to mediate and avoid liquidation. That’s because it was only Monday that the two made plans to talk things out on Tuesday. Well, time flies when you’re not having fun, and it appears both sides were unable to work things out. Liquidation is a likely possibility, and all the Hostess hoarding that goes with it. Now someone hand me a package of Sno Balls and some Kleenex.

The sparring sides were both attempting to save the 18,500 or so jobs that will be lost if Hostess Brands liquidates, but Tuesday’s go at hashing things out  with the new bakers’ union contract “was unsuccessful,” the company said in a statement, via CNNMoney.

A lawyer for the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers International union didn’t comment because of mediation ground rules.

A hearing is scheduled for this morning in bankruptcy court, where Hostess had originally asked for permission to liquidate on Monday, after management shut down the company last Friday.

Tuesday was the only day of talks that the two sides agreed to, so the march toward liquidation is probably going to start soon. When that happens, all of Hostess’ recipes, brands and anything related to the company will be sold to pay off creditors. Wonder Bread could go over there to that company, while Hostess Cup Cakes end up in the hands of another, and so on.

If you haven’t elbowed your fellow shoppers out of the way in the Hostess aisle yet, you might want to get busy. We hope to hit the kitchen soon to try out DIY recipes for Twinkies as well, so stay tuned and send any additional recipes you’d like us to try to tips@consumerist.com.
