Don't Get Your Hopes Up If You Live In New York City & Really Want A Walmart To Move In

Walmart just has the worst luck at trying to get set up in New York City. The mega-chain recently failed to come to economic terms for what would be its first store in the city, but it is refusing to give up the fight. Opponents of Walmart have been successful so far at keeping it out of the city, however, so that battle is going to be a tough one for biggest of big box stores.

In a statement on its website, Walmart said it remains committed to expanding into New York, reports Bloomberg News. The spot it wanted to occupy is in the East New York neighborhood of Brooklyn.

Some politicians and labor unions opposed it saying it would hurt local businesses, even while competitors like Target and Costco have a presence in the city.

“It’s a win all around, but it’s more about the win for the community, then a loss for Wal-Mart,” said a spokesman for the United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 1500, which had played a role in blocking Walmart by supporting ShopRite’s move to occupy the same site.
