I’m annoyed that I cannot rent “Thor” streaming online. I wanted to see it before I go see “The Avengers.” It’s not on Netflix, Amazon, or Vudu for rent. I can only buy it streaming. There’s no way I am buying a movie I’ll probably only ever watch once. My only option for rental seems to be to change the Netflix plan to included DVDs in the mail. There’s no Redbox near me.

This seems kind of crazy. I probably just won’t see it at all.

    • MaxH42 thinks RecordStoreToughGuy got a raw deal says:

Hey, someone else has heard of Vudu!

I’m following the Disc to Digital thing that Walmart/Vudu is rolling out (Vudu was bought by WallyWorld), and it seems all the other Marvel-based movies disappeared very recently, probably intentionally coinciding with the release of The Avengers.

Movie studios’ licencing departments all need to crawl into a big hole in the ground and die.

      • Thyme for an edit button says:

It’s just nuts to make the movies unavailable with the release of “The Avengers.” Because of “The Avengers,” I want to give the movie companies my money to see these movies and they’ll have none of it. What the heck?

        • SecretShopper: pours out a lil' liquor for the homies Wasp & Otter says:

It’s the same reason Disney waited until after Tron 2 came out on DVD to finally release Tron 1, so you’ll buy the Super Hero Sized boxed set with IM, IM2, IH, Thor & Avengers later in the year (just in time for Christmas!!1!)

For the record IMHO Thor was the weakest of the films, save for Tom Hiddleston as Loki. You could probably see Avengers w/o seeing Thor and not miss much.

    • LightningUsagi says:

Know anyone you can borrow it from?

    • Cat says:

Here’s a SWEET deal for you: FREE, on EPIX – http://www.epixhd.com/thor/

I got a 2 – week trial for my Roku. Anyone can watch it, you don’t have to subscribe to pay TV for the trial. Funny thing is, if you like it, and want to keep watching EPIX online after the trial, you need to call your pay TV provider and get pay TV. WTF?

Quality of streaming is decent, but their selection is limited. And, I started my trial 2 weeks and 3 days ago, and it was still letting me watch last night.

    • HogwartsProfessor says:

I feel your pain. I need to see Iron Man and only the second one is on Netflix streaming. Redbox has the first, but it’s always out! >:(

I was gonna go see Avengers in the theater with my honey on our visit, but if I can’t get this watched I might not. I can always rent it later. He can go without me if he’s really dying for it. Men in Black 3 opens that same weekend so I’d like to see that one for sure.

    • InsertPithyNicknameHere says:

You may want to see if your local library either has the movie or can get it with Inter-library loan.

So…you’re saying you’re thor you can’t thee Thor?

    • Thyme for an edit button says:

Thanks to Cat, I have now seen Thor in all it’s aggressively okay glory.

I just wanted to take this chance (since I didn’t have a good one before) to thank everyone who contributed to my post earlier this week. I got a lot of good responses and I appreciate it. Thanks to everyone who made suggestions!

    • SecretShopper: pours out a lil' liquor for the homies Wasp & Otter says:

so have you decided how you’re going to rid yourself of all those CPK’s?

      • pop top says:

Someone suggested going through and compiling a list of what I have, and then using that to research value before I do anything else. I think I’ll do that first, and possibly sell/donate the “worthless” ones. If there are any highly-valuable ones, I’ll probably try to hang onto those for a little longer.

  4. Cat says:

One month until my cross-country trip to NY for my daughter’s graduation. It’s almost all interstate, I-80 or I-90 from Bear Lake ID, through Wyoming to Rochester, NY.

Mrs. Cat insists we make the most of it by sightseeing along the way. Does anyone have suggestions that won’t take us too far off the interstates?

    • Torgonius wants an edit button says:

You won’t be too far from Niagra Falls if that’s your type of thing.

Other than that, my only experiences driving cross-country on I-80 are:

Drive as fast as humanly possible (75 MPH most of the way). Try not to fall asleep in Nebraska, although the road is so straight that if your alignment is good and there’s no traffic, you’d never notice. Roll up the windows in Iowa. Miss rush hour in Gary, IN. Thank the gods you don’t have to follow 80 through Pennsylvania.

      • Loias supports harsher punishments against corporations says:

Miss rush hour in Lincoln, NE, too. I just a trip through there, and I shit you not, all traffic had to be diverted because of a semi that was ON FIRE on the interstate.

    • MaxH42 thinks RecordStoreToughGuy got a raw deal says:

Many years ago making a similar drive we crossed the Rockies at night, and stopped near the top. I didn’t see the stars that clearly again until I was out on a small boat on the open ocean. Although it depends on how late you are willing to drive; this was when we were young and invincible, and 3 of us took shifts driving 24 hours a day except for meal and bathroom breaks. :D

    • HogwartsProfessor says:

Aww, you’re going too far north for to visit anything here. Well actually, the only thing worth visiting in Missouri is me! :D

      • Cat says:

I would never return to Misery.

Moving to Las Vegas, pulling a trailer with a dodge caravan, the van died. We had to abandon it and return a week later after they installed a used engine. A week and $1400 later.

        • HogwartsProfessor says:

          GAH! That sucks. :P

LOL funny how people call it that. Even when they don’t live here. With the weather the last few years, God-awful Torture would be a better term.

    • InsertPithyNicknameHere says:

Well, if you’re taking I-80 / I-90, you’re not going to be too far from Chicago, which has some lovely museums (I highly recommend the Art Institute of Chicago and the Museum of Science and Industry). You can just hop on I-88 outside Davenport, IA, which will take you a bit further north and right into Chicago, and then hop on 90-94 to meet back up with I-88.

Other than that, I don’t have any personal suggestions, but you may want to check On The Way ( http://www.onthewayapp.com/ ), which connects to Google Maps to show interesting little stops for road trips.

      • MaxH42 thinks RecordStoreToughGuy got a raw deal says:

And if you’re in the area of the Museum of Science and Industry, which is worth seeing, the Shedd Aquarium is the best I’ve ever seen, and Baltimore has a world-class aquarium.

In Omaha (where size matters) you can see cats at the Henry Doorly Zoo.

“It features the largest cat complex in North America; ‘Kingdoms of the Night’ is the world’s largest nocturnal exhibit and indoor swamp; the Lied Jungle is one of the world’s largest indoor rainforest, and the ‘Desert Dome’ is the world’s largest indoor desert, as well as the largest glazed geodesic dome in the world.”

The first time I went there, I was thinking: “Zoo … eh … okay, if you really want to” but it was totally awesome.

Got a robo-call yesterday from the Representative for my congressional district. He’s holding a town hall tomorrow, and saying he wants everyone to attend. I’m debating with myself as to whether I should go and ask him to justify his position on a couple of hot-button issues (since I’m quite sure he won’t be able to, and I’d like to see him try to weasel out of it).

    • HogwartsProfessor says:

Ask him how he feels about robocalls. Then if he says “I hate them!” tell him that you got one from him, and you don’t vote for people who robocall you. Watch what happens. :)

  6. HogwartsProfessor says:

    Doggie: Om nom nom….

Had an interview this week for a program coordinator position with a small, safety-oriented non-profit. Sounded cool. We’ll see what happens. Also filled out an app today at the tiny hospital near me. I could walk to that job, even in winter! :)

Yesterday was my last day for DirecTV. The suspension started at midnight. But Roku has been working for the last three days *knock on wood* so I have not been deprived of mah TV watching pleasures. Woot! Now if only AT&T can keep up the DSL speed I’m good.

US Airways canceled my initial 12 pm return flight from Tucson on the 29th! Expedia rebooked me on a flight that leaves at 8 am (GROAN). The only other option was a 6 am flight. Not happening. I got online yesterday and found a 10:45 am one, but the final leg is on United, not US Airways, so they can’t rebook it!!!!! ARRGGGHH!!!

Unfortunately, I found out after the rebook that my honey has to work early on the 29th (can’t get out of it) so he won’t be able to take me to the airport. Not that I mind staying over an extra day, if I can find a flight out!

The only option Expedia was able to give me was to fly there, then call them and cancel the return flight and they’ll rebook the return through US Airways. BUT…..I will have to pay a $150 change fee and the cost difference between the tickets. They said they can arrange a credit so I don’t have to buy a whole new ticket since I already paid. GRRR ARRRGGGHH.

Next time, I’ll just suck up the extra money and fly American. It goes there through Dallas and I’ve never had any problems with flights being canceled, only typical delays, which aren’t usually extreme. No more US Airways / United. This is the second time they’ve canceled a return flight on me like this. At least the Expedia people are very nice and they are trying like hell to help me.

    • InsertPithyNicknameHere says:

First off, good luck on the job applications!

Second, I’m glad to hear Roku is working out for you. I’ve been really surprised by how much content is actually on there, especially if you have Amazon prime and/or Netflix streaming.

      • HogwartsProfessor says:

        Thank you! :)

I can’t do Amazon Prime right now, but when I can I think I will. I order from them enough that the free shipping is worth it, plus I’ll be able to order more (and not pay for shipping). Also, TV content. Heh.

    • catastrophegirl chooses not to fly says:

hooray for saving money with roku! i hope it doesn’t all get eaten up in airline fees

      • HogwartsProfessor says:

Me either. It’s the flight splitting that is the problem. If that last return leg didn’t switch airlines, I could have rebooked it in two seconds, even if I had to pay. What’s annoying is having to cancel and rebook AFTER I get there, which is going to cause me unnecessary stress and worry. I want to enjoy my visit, not spend it being anxious about leaving.

  7. chizu says:

Busy week this week. I ended up working a full week, so the extra money is nice to have. Next week is likely going to be a “regular” 25 hours week for me. (booo) Last week, I started helping out on a project (which is the reason why I had to work the full 40), but somehow… I kind of ended up taking over the entire project??? My coworkers think I’m better at doing these kinds of things (research, analysis + report writing). But the thing is, I don’t. I just… Use Google a lot, and I do what I have to do…

I’ve been eating so much more than usual, I’m actually scared of getting on the scale. (I’m probably 8 pounds over where I would like to be. About 15-20 pounds heavier than all my other girlfriends… -_- I’m not tall, so every pound counts…) But at the same time, if I don’t keep eating (I’m actually one of those people who eat every 2-4 hours), I probably won’t be able to maintain my blood sugar. (My fasting level had been as low as 3.3 mmol/L, or two hours after dinner at 4.0 mmol/L.) The other day, even though I wasn’t hungry, I went on not eating for about 4-5 hours (I ate around noon), and before I got off of work, I started shaking and felt really nauseated. I didn’t realise my blood sugar plummeted and probably would have fainted if I didn’t eat something while I was at Costco. (It was going to be another 2 hours before I had dinner.) I probably should adjust my diet a bit and see if that helps. Oh, right, exercise might help too… But for now, I guess I’ll… Keep eating every few hours…

What’s everyone’s weekend plan? It’s Mother’s Day weekend — it means it’s time to plant some tomatoes!

    • InsertPithyNicknameHere says:

My plan is to leave my mother the heck alone this weekend. Every year, my sister makes plans to go out to breakfast or brunch with my mother, all three of us kids, and my sisters’ respective families, and every year, I get to hear about my mother complain that she’d just like some time to herself, rather than have to go to a horribly crowded restaurant. So, that’s part of my present – my absence.

      • chizu says:

Then you know she’s going to complain about how no one care to celebrate it with her. :)

        • InsertPithyNicknameHere says:

True, but if I’m not there, I don’t have to listen to that. ;)

          • MaxH42 thinks RecordStoreToughGuy got a raw deal says:

Besides, this way you may get the same amount of complaining afterwards, but you save yourself the aggravation of the actual brunch!

    • SecretShopper: pours out a lil' liquor for the homies Wasp & Otter says:

This weekend will be slow for me mostly chores around the house that I’ve neglected, trying to pare down Mt. Laundry and just chillin. After last weekend where I saw, with different groups, Avengers 3x and spent way too much time at the bar, my liver and wakket could use the rest

    • catastrophegirl chooses not to fly says:

fatty or protein rich foods keep the carbs from digesting as quickly. and it doesn’t have to be bad fats. peanut butter or olive oil works too. it levels out blood sugar a lot.

      • chizu says:

My diet is primarily protein and carb (I need to slip some more fruit and veggies in there, more than I do right now). And I do take a healthy quantity of good fat (cook in olive oil, avocado, etc.). So I have no idea what’s with the recent blood sugar drop. :/

I’ve actually just averaged out eating about every 2 hours today at work…

    • HogwartsProfessor says:

Gotta finish my skating dress for our show next week. It’s cut out but not assembled. I need to get it done in case it doesn’t work out, so I can find an alternative. :P So it’s going to be a very exciting weekend (NOT).

Any advice on how to save money on theme park tickets? My daughter’s class at school is going to Busch Gardens next week for their class trip, but unfortunately, Maddie has been bullied by so many of the girls in her grade lately that she decided she doesn’t want to go. I want to take the day off and taking her to Universal Islands of Adventure instead of having her just sit in an empty classroom all day. Even with the Florida resident discount, tickets are $70 each, which is a little more than I’d like to spend….and because of the situation, I don’t want anything to make this unable to happen.

    • pecan 3.14159265 says:

Check the tourism board to see whether they do package deals. And see whether Coke or Pepsi have deals. Sometimes soda companies partner with amusement parks for discounts.

    • Cat says:

Buy a realistic-looking BB gun and demand that park security guard Russ Lasky take you through the park. Eventually the SWAT team will arrive along with the park owner. Hilarity ensues.

    • chizu says:

Are you any warehouse member? Maybe Costco will have discounts? Or how about AAA?

I’m sorry that this is happening to your daughter, it’s so sad that she’s so bullied that she’d rather sit out. I do hope this trip will happen and you guys will have a really good time.

    • catastrophegirl chooses not to fly says:

if you are willing to sit through a time share presentation you may be able to get free tickets. they used to do that when i worked there anyway.

      Wet sanding the Lady sucks.

Charlie is this some kind of euphemism I’ve somehow missed

      /S

      • DJ Charlie says:

Naah. Repainting the Lady so she’s less “ambulancy,” and more deep-ruby-red. First coat is done, so the sanding with 300+ grit paper has started. Then another coat of paint, and sanding with 600+ grit, and then another coat, and 1200+ grit. And then polish!

        • SecretShopper: pours out a lil' liquor for the homies Wasp & Otter says:

well that does sound like an unenviable task, lotsa sanding

        • HogwartsProfessor says:

I wish I knew how to do this. My hood got blistered in the heat wave last summer and looks like poo. I have no idea how to fix it. :(

    It’s so nice out!

    • catastrophegirl chooses not to fly says:

Farmer’s market sounds good. When I lived in Santa Cruz, they had a huge one downtown. I miss it. We have one here but by the time I get out of skating, it’s kinda over.

The cell phone tower dream in my neighborhood isn’t quite dead yet. I ran into one of my township supervisors, and told him flat out – I want a cell phone tower so I don’t have to sit in my neighbor’s field on a 5 gallon bucket when I make calls! My neighbor is cool with it, but still, this is 2012. He said they’re working with Verizon and another landowner & everyone is hopeful, so…keeping fingers crossed.

I noticed that season 2 of Downton Abby was added to Netflix streaming! Yay! And while I was helping my Dad a few weeks ago, he was watching The Wild Wild West from the 1960’s on one of his cable channels. I had forgotten how much I enjoyed that as a kid. It’s on Netflix DVD’s, and should arrive tomorrow. Our local mail processing center is slated to close on Tuesday, so I’m anxious to see how much this affects the DVD delivery back and forth. Currently, if I mail a DVD on Monday, a new one appears in my mailbox on Wednesday. I’m afraid those days are gone.

My grand plans for the weekend are to gather up the stray cement blocks sitting out by the shed, and make my 5′ x 5′ brush burning area (township rule – too many people burned giant piles of things and caused brush fires) and to gather up all the branches, etc. to burn during the next rainy period. OOOO, livin’ large now!

    • catastrophegirl chooses not to fly says:

i’d like to know more about your brush burning area. my land is heavily wooded so i try to be careful and can currently only burn what fits in my chimenea

      • lovemypets00 - You'll need to forgive me, my social filter has cracked. says:

I have an area in the yard where I used to plant a garden, but due to laziness and not having the time to tend it, I haven’t planted one in a few years, so I am making a 5′ square area with the cement blocks, and I’m going to break up the branches, sticks, and stuff, plus leaves or whatever – and make sure it’s raining before I burn – and get rid of the stuff. When I decide to garden again, it won’t hurt the ground, and the blocks can be easily moved. It’s an open area in the yard, but I won’t burn anything until it’s raining so I don’t set the field on fire. That tends to be embarrassing.

        • catastrophegirl chooses not to fly says:

maybe i could do something like that in my front yard and use it to scare the neighbors.

    • HogwartsProfessor says:

Oh cool. I have Downton Abbey in my queue. I need to start watching it. Since my DTV is on suspension, I probably will make a TV schedule soon and pencil it in.

      • cash_da_pibble says:

Racecar- the cat in my profile photo- used to do this. Sometimes he would spook and then I’d have to take Cash home and then go find him clinging to a tree or on someone’s fence looking very confused.

I second the “thank God you’re not driving 80 through Pennsylvania.” Having done it so many times driving home from Los Angeles, you want to open a vein. We actually changed to driving the southern route on I40 and Texas/Oklahoma will also make you want to open a vein.

Go see Niagara Falls since you’ll be in the Buffalo area but bring your passports and see it from the Canadian side.
