Springtime Proves It's The Right Time For Retailers To Get A Bump

Warmer weather this winter across the country and the hope for an early spring is sending consumers out to buy clothing in anticipation of rising temperatures, something retailers are happy to see as their cash registers ring merrily. It might not last, but for now, stores are happy.

Reuters says companies like Target, Macy’s, Victoria’s Secret and even Gap are beating Wall Street forecasts with their sales in February. Gap has been struggling and forced to close multiple stores, but saw an uptick in sales for its Banana Republic brand.

Stocking up on springy clothing items is popular right now, as in many regions in the nation, it barely feels like winter has been around at all. When it comes to making sure we’ve got the right dudes for warm weather, consumers seem ready to spend.

That hustle and bustle might slow down, however, as gas prices rise to “the level that will curb consumption somewhat,” said Joel Bines, managing director of consulting firm AlixPartners. “Shoppers will end up consolidating trips.”
