There Are Now 238 Fewer Indie Labels On Streaming Services Like Spotify, Rdio

While music fans have been happy to listen to their favorite tunes with Spotify, Rdio, Napster and other streaming services, some of those in the business of actually selling music aren’t so pleased with the results. One distributor has announced it’s pulling 238 indie labels from streaming services.

As The Onion‘s AV Club reports, that small subscription fee you might pay — or in some cases, consumers pay nothing at all — to use Spotify and the like, doesn’t go far toward paying the people making, producing and distributing the music.

A U.K.-based distributor, STHoldings, announced that the decision to yank the 200-plus labels, as the tiny amount of money to be made isn’t worth “cannibalizing” their revenues.

STH’s statement on their site references a report on the buying habits of listeners who use streaming services, adding:

As a distributor we have to do what is best for our labels. The majority of which do not want their music on such services. They provide poor revenue and have a detrimental affect on sales. Add to that, the feeling that their music loses its specialness by its exploitation as a low value/free commodity.
