You Are Watching More TV And More Internet Video, Too

Americans spend 146 hours and 20 minutes parked in front of TVs, according to new data from Nielsen. And almost half of all consumers — 48% — now watch videos on the Internet. Typical Internet viewership is 4 hours and 26 minutes per month, up 15% from a year ago.

TV viewership is up 1.9% since 2010, and more of it is being done by DVR, rather than on the networks’ schedules. Multichannel News clicked through the data:

Americans spend more than four times watching time-shifted TV — on DVRs and video-on-demand — than watching online video, according to the Nielsen study.

Compared with the second quarter of 2010, time-shifted TV viewing rose 11% among all TV homes, primarily the result of increased DVR penetration. The number of TV households with a DVR increased to 39% (up nearly 13% year-over-year). Over the past two years, time-shifted TV viewing per month has jumped 31%, Nielsen said.

Just 20% of viewers watch 83% of streaming videos, according to Nielsen. The top viewers stream about an hour a day. Only 10% of consumers currently watch video on their phones or other mobile devices.
