Netflix Cancels Qwikster DVD Service, Goes Back To All-In-One Site

Well, that was fast: Less than a month after Netflix announced it’d be splitting into two sites — Netflix for streaming movies and Qwikster for DVDs — it’s decided that that maybe isn’t the best idea. For those of you who were outraged, your roars have been heard.

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings posted the news in a blog entry this morning, and emailed to Netflix customers, titled “DVDs will be staying on netflix.com,” saying that July’s price hike was necessary but that Qwikster was probably not the way to go.

It is clear that for many of our members two websites would make things more difficult, so we are going to keep Netflix as one place to go for streaming and DVDs.

This means no change: one website, one account, one password… in other words, no Qwikster.

While the July price change was necessary, we are now done with price changes.

We’re constantly improving our streaming selection. We’ve recently added hundreds of movies from Paramount, Sony, Universal, Fox, Warner Bros., Lionsgate, MGM and Miramax. Plus, in the last couple of weeks alone, we’ve added over 3,500 TV episodes from ABC, NBC, FOX, CBS, USA, E!, Nickelodeon, Disney Channel, ABC Family, Discovery Channel, TLC, SyFy, A&E, History, and PBS.

We value our members, and we are committed to making Netflix the best place to get movies & TV shows.

Thank you.

When the change was announced in September, responses ranged from, “Well, that’s dumb” to “I am very, very angry! [shaking fist!].” But honestly, we’re just sad for the guy who had the Twitter handle Qwikster and was waiting to make big bucks off selling it. Better luck next time, bro.
