Judging from the bulk of Microsoft’s major announcements at its E3 press conference Monday, the company doesn’t want Xbox 360 owners to turn off its machine when they want to watch TV rather than play games. A fall system update will deliver Bing-powered voice web search, a YouTube app and an unnamed TV-streaming service.

The biggest question mark regarding the YouTube announcement is why it took so long to get to the device. The PS3 has had a YouTube app for years, and the Wii’s browser has always played YouTube videos. At least the Xbox 360, which lacks a browser, has led the way on the TV-streaming front with its ESPN 3 integration for paying Xbox Live members.
