A 71-year-old North Carolina Walmart greeter was killed when she found herself in the wrong place during a stampede involving the chase of an alleged shoplifter.
WRAL reports a 23-year-old male shoplifting suspect tried to flee the store when employees gave chase, and someone barreled into the woman, who later died from injuries suffered in the collision. The man faces charges of two counts of simple assault.
The victim’s daughter said she had begged her mom to stop working at Walmart, but said she needed the job to cope with life without her departed husband:
“A lot of people her age are not even working. She hung onto her job after we lost our dad because that gave her life.”
